I have a recent P990 i - issued by and locked to Orange.

In system information - the firmware presently is:

Phone CXC 162037 R76A001
Bluetooth CXC 162058 R4F01
Organiser CXC162036 R3B01
CDA CDA 162008/16 R3A02

I have done one update using the installed Update Service software and after a successful update the
firmware is still as listed above (this was done on 08/02/07).

I know that the latest update phone firmware is R9EC001 - but when I start
the Update Service again, it is telling me that the firmware on the phone is up to date.

This can not be correct.
It would appear that the update service is not uploading the new firmware.
Can anyone help me with this ? What is the correct procedure ?
I thank you in anticipation.

The latest firmware is not available for branded phones.
Yours is branded to Orange, so this is why.
Latest firmware for branded Orange phone may be the one you listed.

Many thanks for the debrand info. Do you know of any debrand service operating in the Birmingham area?

Or seunlock.co.uk
Both require you to post your phone to them, so area in UK doesn't matter.
There's a more expensive diy solution SE Tools in which you buy some kit, so works in any location. Try google for more details.

It is so frustrating that Orange haven't managed to get themselves sorted out. We've paid good money for a phone, they've messed it up and are dragging their heels on basic firmware updates. Time for debranding, as has already been said.

Does the same apply to Vodafone P990i's?

Mine is reporting..

Phone: CXC 162037 R7A001
Bluetooth: CXC 162058 R4F01
Organiser: CXC 162036 R3B01
CDA: CDA 162008/91 R3A01

..and the SE update service says it has the latest. Ideally I'd like to go up to the 'World' versions listed here:

http://uiq3.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/CDA/P990i

Is that likely to be possible (without voiding the phone's warranty) ?

Not likely possible, definitely possible. Read above. Does not affect warranty. Warranty is with SE for hardware. Branding and locking are software controlled by opeator.

Thanks to all who responded to this post. I now know a lot more than I did about this firmware and the service providers software.
Decided on SEunlock.co.uk. My phone should be back with me tomorrow.
Thanks again.
Chris
