Sony Ericsson Talks Up U.S. Phone Plans

BARCELONA -- Sony Ericsson executives said high-speed 3G phones from the up-and-coming manufacturer are coming to the U.S., but not to CDMA carriers like Sprint and Verizon, at the 3GSM cell phone trade show in Barcelona on Sunday.

Speaking privately with PC Magazine, Sony Ericsson head of product marketing Steve Walker said phones with tri-band UMTS – in other words, phones which will work both on Cingular's high-speed network and abroad – are coming "imminently."

So far, Sony's several high-speed phones, all designed for Europe and Asia, have lacked the US 3G frequency bands. Walker said the problem is that Sony Ericsson relies on Ericsson's chipsets, and up until now Ericsson hasn't been able to provide chips that handle the U.S. 3G frequencies. But that's going to change soon, he said, without offering any more specific details.
