> Mig 33 & Data Usage
Bookmark topic
I have installed and setup mig33 and it is working great. Does anyone know if it is particularly data hungry? Is there another MSN client which is more economical on the data?
I've heard some horror stories about people racking up huge data bills and I want to make sure I don't do the same!

@craig
I think mig33 is data hungry. More than data it drains my battery out so fast. The best way to use MSN on fones is to use the inbuilt Instant Messaging client. On SE phones its called 'My Friends'
Some free mobile IM service providers
1.
www.chatnu.dk (supports msn and even regularly alerts on new mails on Hotmail. Its the only IM that works currently with MSN)
2.
www.yamigo.com (supports msn, yahoo but service currently DOWN)
3.
www.smartvas.com (supports MSN but service currently down)
4.
www.speago.com (just a simple IM service that is WORkING but no msn support)
Using the inbuilt client is very data efficient and battery efficient for me. Besides, all these services also let u control the polling frequency so that u can control the data usage. Moreover, the inbuilt IM runs on the background and alerts on incomin msg. also, u can run other java apps along with it.

How do you use the 'My Friends' part of the phone? Is it network dependant? I have something on my work phone (Nokia) which is similar but you need to be using a provider who supports it. o2 never used to support it, I don't know if they do now.
I have seen the 'My Friends' folder in the file manager but I don't know how it works.

'My Friends' is not network dependent. It works on any gprs connection. Besides, it works even on just a wap only gprs connection. U just need to configure it with the appropriate IM provider settings...
First sign up for a free a/c at one of d IMPS sites. Then on 'My friends' , goto settings and then enter username, password and server address.
for chatnu.dk the server address is
http://imps.chatnu.dk:4899
On nokia phones, i think its called Presence service

Thanks loads for the info. I have also found another service (Yamigo) which aparently works.
The only problem is that I don't have the 'My Friends' option on my phone. There is a directory on the phone called My Friends, but I cannot find the option for it. I'm assuming it should be in the messaging menu but it isn't there and I can't find it.
I'm assuming that o2 have removed it and I'll need to debrand if I want to use it.

Lets see Mig kbs use (I use msn/icq):
1. Login: 2-5 kb aprox
2. IM: standby 20-50kb aprox
3. IM: low chat in 1 hour 50-100kb aprox
4. IM: high chat in 1 hour 100-200kb aprox
