I'm perfectly happy with my SE W810, except I no longer need the Walkman functionality - I've discovered that the iPod Nano serves my music needs 100x better. Also, I really couldn't give a hoot about the camera - 9/10 times I'm taking pictures of my cats. Finally, the only times I access the Internet over the phone is to check the weather and movie times, so EDGE is unnecessary, never mind 3G. (And the occasionally needed reboot to use the Internet is getting tiresome...)

So I need something that's "just a phone." Despite the 3 things I hate about their phones, Motorola is very good at making a phone that's just a phone - good RF, good audio quality, good SMS'ing, all in a compact, attractive, relatively inexpensive package. I would go so far as to say that such decontented phones are Moto's strong suit, and they do it better than

However, it's hard to ignore these common failings of Motorola phones:

UI - I've always hated Moto's UI. I'm using the word hate here. It's drab and dated in look, and clumsy in function. There's no reason to scroll past 37 layers of cryptic menus full of Windows 3.1 icons to find something basic.
Address Book - It's never been truly hierarchical, or terribly useful for non-numeric contact data.
Bluetooth - The weakest implementation seen on any phone.

I can soldier on with my W810, though without usage, it's just a big, glorified brick.

What to do?

Wow, so very insightful

Do they even make monochrome phones any more?

Sure they have a monochrome one : the Motofone, new model, slim and simple.
Dunno, whether it's going to be sold in Europe, though.
And you're right, Moto's are very good at being just a PHONE .
My first mobile, 12 years ago, was a Moto and I still always have at least one Moto .

Love your cat! But really... How can you consider a thing that weirdly proclaims, "Hello Moto..."? Com'on, we are cat people... We are more reasonable than the rest!!! Buy an e61!!! Nothing better without a camera!!!! Imagine a software bug that disables all alarmtones except for "hell-oh, Moto" ???????

Your cat looks really cool. Does he / she ever get mad and try to scratch your eyes out?

I had a female cat once who did this when she got in a bad mood. She was cool.

Hi Twist,
Unlike most here there are some positives and whilst i agree Moto's UI has not been the best i believe this new model has a much better UI and also besides looking nice does have good build quality. But at the end of the day only you can decide what you want or like.

About the UI, I found it pretty pathetic for a while till I found this great site called "modmymoto.com", where you can download and install new skins on your moto phone, which practically changes the whole UI including menu icons.

About the phonebook, I find it fairly usable...

Bluetooth IS crap.
