The memory stick of my p990 has gone corrupt and when i try to format it thru the control panel of the phone, i get an error saying " Formatting failed. You have to reformat the memory stick before it can be used." When i try to format it using my laptop it simply cannot read the stick at all. Any ideas on how i can format my memory stick so i may be able to use it again? Please heeeelllllllllllllllllpppppppppppppp

If you have a memory card reader try connecting it to your PC and formatting it that way, see if that will work.

@Sammy, I think he has already tried that, he mentioned using his notebook but it couldn't detect it. @Tony, did you just purchase your memory stick? I'd suggest going back for an exchange or refund. I've encountered such problems before and if your computer isn't even able to detect the memory card, it'll be difficult or impossible to format it. You didn't get it off ebay, did you?

Chances are you've fallen victim to a fake MS DUO.

The same thing happened to me when on my 2GB MS DUO Pro.
After 3 months of bliss, applications installed on the MS started randomly disappearing from my phone's application folders.
Later on, I got the dreaded Memory Stick is Corrupt message.
I formatted it and it worked again.

After a week, I got that message again. This time around, the MS refused to be formatted, giving the same error message you mentioned.

I decided to do some Googling on how to identify fake MS duos.
I then found out I got a fake one.

There are plenty of sites with useful info on fake MS Duos. You can visit this site for starters:

I used to have a link to a similar site with pictures but I seem to have lost it... anyway... I'm sure you can easily find that site with a simple google search.

As to where you can find a sure-shot genuine one... well the safest (but expensive) bet would be your nearest Sony shop. Other than that... make sure you've studied thoroughly the guidelines on fake MS. Also make sure of the warranty. It should be 5 years.. I think.
