seems the divx site doesn't have a codec compatible with vista yet and though google comes up with a few choices I'm not confident about any of them

can anyone recommend (not just suggest from a random search) a codec compatible with vista that works well with windows media player?

thanks!

i DO know u asked for well based solutions, but maybe this what u are asking for?

"Windows Vista has the same problem with Windows XP and earlier Windows platform operating system, that’s all of them doesn’t come prepackaged or preinstalled with all the codecs (coder-decoder) needed to play various media files that popularly used and widely found on the web. Such codecs include Quicktime, Ogg Vorbis, Flash Video, Xvid, DivX, AC3, Real Media and etc. If you don’t have a specific codec which requires to playback a video or audio files or view the images or pictures, you won’t be able to open the files in media players meaningfully. The video may be played with sound only without motion video, or simply give not supported codec error for audio and image files."

yeah thanks, that package was the first result I got from google and it seems that site just say much the same thing

but I don't like installing unknown stuff on my pc and so really am looking for a known recommendation, but I guess if none is forthcoming then I'll give that a bash

I always use the K-lite or k-lite mega codec pack here, both rated for use with vista from their site.

http://www.codecpackguide.com/klcodec.htm

The individual codec installers should work as well, I see xvid also has installers out there too. The divx installer should work fine for vista. Just need to mix n match what codecs you need such as AC3, xvid, divx etc.. Gspot is a great little tool for finding out what particular codecs you need for any given media file you drop onto it
