The defective handset was videoed on a cameraphone by handset reseller, Advanced Mobile. The store reported the incident to Mobile magazine, which promptly informed Nokia.

The publication "Mobile magazine" reports that Nokia is thoroughly investigating the issue, particularly with regard to the origin of both the battery and the charger. Mobile has published the smoking video on its web site. WATCH HERE

David Crayford,a cab driver from Gloucester and a 3 customer, said his new 3G phone started overheating and 'fizzing white smoke' hours after switching it on for the first time.

The last moments of smoke coming out of the phone were captured on a mobile phone video in the store.

An investigation into a smoking Nokia handset has concluded that a damaged battery caused the phone to overheat, smoke and melt.

A dealer supplied Mobile with a video of the smoking handset, after Gloucester-based cab driver Dave Crayford visited his store to purchase a car kit for the Nokia 6280.

The 6280 was supplied to Crayford direct as an upgrade by 3.

Mobile passed on the handset to Nokia, which said it had the handset independently tested.

A Nokia spokesman told Mobile that a 'third-party failure examination report clearly shows the incident was a result of "physical deformations, caused by extensive external force on the battery”.'

While the report identifies the cause of the problem, it leaves the question of how the battery became damaged.

Crayford told Mobile: 'Nokia realises that if the battery was damaged it wasn't by me, they're offering me a new handset. I'm happy with that.'

Mobile is unaware of any other incidents involving a Nokia 6280, which has sold in millions.

Gave him a new one. But is that enough. Incidents like these go unnoticed elsewhere.
