Hi, I seem to have a really strange problem with my k800.

Sometimes when I am accessing menu, browsing through the options the phone automatically goes into sleep mode whereby the screen blacks out and cannot be woken by the joystick but only when i press any key.

This only happens sometimes and I cannot predict the pattern of when it happens.

I have all the options turned off ie standby clock etc so i cannot explain why it cuts out.

Does anyone have a similar problem or know how i can stop this from happening?

This is my 2nd k800. The first one I had did not have this problem.

Which firmware? Which EROM? Branded? Unbranded?

umm. not sure exactly what you mean but the software version is R1ED001

I tried updating it via the sony ericsson update service just now but it said i had the current software anyhow.

i got it from o2 i originally had the silver james bond edition k800 which did not have this problem and they replaced it with a generic silver one without all the james bond stuff on it.

do you have any idea what the problem is or how i can fix it?

Both the problems you describe are already known and discussed in this topic.

After the firmware version R1ED001, the phone does not wake up anymore on joystick motions, you will have to press any of the keyboard buttons, which IMHO was a stupid improvement, but I imagine it was a way to save battery life by not waking up the phone by accidentally moving the joystick while the phone lies in a bag or a pocket.

The screen locker sometimes blanks out the screen while you are typing, since for some reason the standby mode timer is not stopped even though keyboard buttons are pressed. Again, this may have something to do with reducing battery consumption.

Hi

I don't think we are describing quite the same thing. Basically while I am using the joystick to go through menu>options etc without pressing any keys, the phone goes automatically into sleep mode sometimes, not all the time.

Is this the same problem you are describing?

it basically just shuts out and goes into sleep mode when i am navigating around with the joystick but not actually pressing any of the buttons.

Happens to me too, and I've only just updated to the latest firmware version, must be a bit of a bug!

Yeah I've had this problem too!

Sometimes when I use the joystick while accessing the menu, messages just navigating around without actually going into any section it just cuts out and the screen goes black.

It doesn't even go into the dim light mode before it goes to the sleep mode, it just goes straight into the sleep mode. I thought there was something broken with it.

Does anyone else know how to fix this problem?

My friend has the same phone and does not experience this problem at all. I have updated the software and everything but I still have this problem..

To be honest its only annoying rather than anything else.. but i am concerned it might have long term implications to the phone as in it goes to black consistently no matter what you do.

does anyone have a solution?

Yes, I think it is. Sometimes, my phone goes to standby mode when it shouldn't, eve though I'm navigating around using the joystick, and certainly I am not inactive long enough to triger a legitimate standby mode entry. It may be a connection with the removal of wakeup from standby on joystick actions. And yes, I agree it's a bug. I have just recently installed R1JC002, and I have not noticed this behavior yet after the upgrade.

My friend has a k800 as well. We bought it at the same time and both have the same software version the R1ED001, but he does not experience the same problem of the phone blacking out into standby mode while hes using the phone moving the joystick around etc.

We have the exact same phone same software version.. so what is the explanation for why I have this problem but he doesn't?

If it is a bug should it not affect everyone with the same software version not just a select few?

It just seems like the problem is more severe than it is.. I mean I hate to think that it would completely black out all the time after say 6 months use regardless of what you are doing at the time. That could be very annoying.

Guys, try this. Switch the theme that you are using back to the original SE theme like 'Deep Purple'.

I've used some 3rd party themes b4 and it created havoc for my k800i like the problems you all mentioned and some corrupted graphics.
