basically i made a complaint to voda about the complete balls up that was made of repairing my handset. their response has arrived this morning, and now i have to make a decision.

here it isQuote:
we are unable to debrand your w950i, and do not stock debranded versions, so cannot exchange it for you. we do stock debranded m600i though, and would be happy to exchange it for you.

you enquired about cancelling your contract and were quoted a fee of over £500, due to the difficulty experienced we would not charge you this, subject to the return of the w950i. alternatively, if you choose to stay with vodafone we can offer you 6 months half price line rental.

so, firstly. should i take the debranded m600i? i know it has a different keyboard setup, and not the walkman bit. but i would be able to update it via seus, right? other than them differences, is there anything else majorly different about the 2 phones? will the m600i still be as good for using as an mp3 player (what is the music player like)?

would it be worth asking if my phone can be sent to sony ericsson to be debranded, with the authority of vodafone?

thanks.

If it was me I would send back the w950i and cancel the contract then move to someone else that can offer you what you require.

Why settle for a phone you never wanted just because they refuse to get you an unbranded phone?

You can debrand it yourself for £4.

Its about the P990i but a W950i has been done with the same service with 100% success so do that and take the cheap line rental

i would consider sending my phone off for debranding or a d.i.y approach, but only as a final resort. if i can manage to get voda to authorise it to be done at SE then im sorted for warranty cover aswell!!

im in two minds as to whether to stay with voda, i was kind of skanked into signing up for 18months, when i was quoted 12. so i will be trying to get 6 months written off of my contract really. i would prefer to be dropped down to a 12 month contract than have 6 months half price.

I wouldn't trust a Vodafone "debranded" handset to be truly debranded - last I heard the models they are supplying now are much less branded than the heavily modified version they originally shipped, but they are still customised (with Voda startup/shutdown screens at least) and they still have a Voda-designated CDA that will prevent you from getting the very latest updates until Voda get around to approving them - if ever.

I'd take the £4 option. In fact I am taking the £4 option, with my own heavily Voda-fied M600.

My opinion tell Voda to sack it, and move to a network who can offer you what you want.

If you want a 12 month contract then cancel the one you have and move networks to whoever suits you best.

I would not compromise on what handset I WANT because they can't supply it the way it is supposed to be.

I would be interested to see how you get on because I tried 2 x M600i's and it wouldn't touch them. Saying that they were both prototypes.

Uh-oh - I take it they weren't? That's disappointing...

To be fair, not matter what SP you get your phone from it will have a SP CDA so it will not update very regularly. To get a generic one you would have to buy the handset sim free from somewhere like expansys.

With the DIY approach you can simply change back the CDA and rebrand the phone if you ever needed any work doing under warranty. obviously this is not just for the diy way, i am sure sending the phone off would be another way of rebranding although more costly.
