i have the update service on my PC already so i tried to use that, but i got a messge pop up saying.
"Failed checking application versions, please reinstall the application and make sure you have the latest version"
so i d/l it from the SE site again and installed it but still getting the same thing
any ideas?

try confirming that windows is fully updated, uninstall, then make sure the entire program folder is deleted before re-installong

As you are far from a novice when it comes to SE and their products i do find this extremely strange. But i just had to install Tom Tom on a member of this forums N73 as it was all going into the right places on the memory card but would start installing and continually fail. In the end the only solution was to factory reset the phone and then i flashed it with the latest firmware and then all was good.
For fear of sounding like Ares the only thing i can think of is reformat the phones drive and do a master reset first. I can't believe i have actually said that but if that doesn't work i think your only option left will be an SE service centre Good Luck.
