Bit of a rant really, don't know if it's just me but there seems to be a lot of Ebay sellers charging stupid amounts for P & P. It's something which does annoy me

There recently has been a few phones I've got where I've paid £10 postage and it's cost £2-£3 in actual postage. Now I understand the need to incorporate the cost of the packaging and the like, but it doesn't cost £7-£8 for a Jiffy bag and a bit of bubble wrap! Recieved a faulty red K750i today, just the phone and battery only - in an obviously re-used and re-shaped small cardboard box with a bit of tape on either end, not even any bubble wrap in it. He charged me £8 for delivery. What did it cost? £1.27. Methinks someone's taking the piss! Just found an auction for a boxed 8800 where the seller's charging £20 for delivery If that isn't blatent profiteering I don't know what is!

Anyone else noticed this, and fancy a rant with me? Or explain why postage charges are so inflated? I suspect some people are either/or over compensating or using the new postal rules as an excuse to ramp up postal charges, or covering things like Paypal fees and listing fees by sneaking an extra few (or quite a few!) pounds on the postal charges!

I always put a small mark up on each item of around 20-30p, i don't charge for packaging as i always recycle were possible, if not then its my loss! so i only charge correct postage, which i check on royal mail website +20-30p for my time!

So yes I'll join in on this rant seeing as i try to be a genuine eBay-er and despise being ripped off too!

I NEVER bid on an item if i deem the postage to be too high, yet unfortunately this will never stop them i know!

I have to admit I often 'guesstimate' the postage and end up with a pound or two 'profit', things like that I don't mind too much, it's when they blatently charge £10-£15 for something that costs them less than a fiver, that is blatent profiteering!

if i'm selling phones i usually have paypal only as payment method and postage at 8-10 quid as the fees that paypal takes are quite high depending on final sale price. post everything special next day delivery so its usually about 5-6 quid anyway so i don't make much if any profit from postage

i hope ebay get on top of this one... it really isn't fair on the buyers. i sell on ebay regularly and i keep my postage to the cost, plus a small mark-up to cover some of the ebay charges. one thing i've notice though, is that i do get bids where others don't... so maybe buyers are getting wiser and shunning those that try to rip us off!

Well it's like when you buy a video game, they might charge like £2-3 for a first class UK delivery, nothing better. Then you realise when you sell one of your own video games by the same first class UK delivery and it only costs £0.64 to post it.

I tend to avoid those sellers with stupid postage charges, or if it's an item I want, I adjust what I'm going to bid accordingly to take into account any excess postal charges.

@lesley - I'm the same with my postage, I do 'guesstimate' and usually have an extra pound or two for fees etc., though sometimes my postage charges aren't enough and I actually make a loss on it on occasion!

Maybe I should be doing more - like reporting those who charge silly amounts for postage, or perhaps Ebay should provide a reason for reporting someone charging too much for postage, e.g. like you can report any fraudulent listings.

Sammy, remember many sellers deliberately up the postage to avoid paying the fees. I bought, by mistake, something for £2.99 and the postage was £7. You only pay fees on the £2.99. Just report them and the auction may be pulled, though unlikely, as ebay are very slow to react to anything.

I have charged £10 for delivery on a phone before but it weighed nearly 2kg with all the extras added and it was sent by next day delivery that cost me about 8 quid
