When you open the camera lense a bright white LED by the shutter button comes on for a few seconds and then fades out. What is it for? I found no reference to it in the manual.

It also comes up when you activate the video phone camera, so I think of it as a progress indicator, kinda like the Hard Drive Led on a PC.

almost every camera has this light to inform you that you are ready to take pictures after it goes out.
and for p990 its time the camera's app to open and you are ready to use it.

Yes most cameras have an indicator to show when the flash is ready but I don't see the point with this one. If you see the image on the screen then it's ready so why the bright white LED? I cannot find any reference to it in the manual.

again,it is the time the camera's application take to open.notice that the screen shot will appear only after this led goes out(when you open the lens or the app)

It's so you can use it in the dark and can see the shutter button, instead of holding it the wrong way and pressing the browser button or play button and open up another app.

I suppose it also blinks in the countdown on the self-timer function as well, at least on K750 it does that

I think it was a task given to the SE guy that normally designs the BT indicator light on Pxxx phones, they hadn't th heart to sack him.
