Well I bought my computer a while back and since have been upgrading it and whatnot, but what is really starting to bug me is the hardrive I have. I'm still using the original 160GB one that came already in the computer, the problem being that it is one single hardrive yet it for some reason has been divided into three different hardrives/sections before I bought it, and yes I bought it brand new.

As I said, one single 160GB hardrive which when looking at it on the computer has been divided into three sections, as follows...

HDD (C:) 29.9GB
Backup (D:) 7.79GB
Local Disk (E:) 111GB

Unfortunately, all of the main Windows files, Documents and programs etc are installed onto the C drive which acts as the main hardrive section. I am not sure what the Backup D drive is for, but it contains things such as Cabs, Drivers, Sys etc whatever they are. Finally the biggest drive, drive E, was originally empty. Since, I have installed my various video games onto this drive due to obvious memory space issues on the main C drive, as well as recently having to move all of my music from My Music onto it as well. This is all rather annoying and troublesome as I am horribly low on space in the main C drive and being the main drive used by the computer, this does cause problems, such as the drive refusing to properly defragment due to a lack of the apparently required 15% of free space for the process to take place.

As this is all really just one single hardrive I was hoping someone with computer knowledge here on Esato could help me in bringing the three sections together into one big drive as it is supposed to be? If not, does this mean I'd have to buy a new hardrive all together, if so having to also buy a copy of Windows XP or even Vista as it was pre-installed and I did not recieve the usual XP disc.

Any help?

partition magic would do it or a program of this ilk. they aint always fool proof though. the back up part will have windows and any other programs and files that came with the comp.so thats why you wont have a windows disc
easiest thing to do in my opinion by a second hdd and install that and just move as much as you can onto it.
then just install and save all new program pics etc to that

your hard drive is partitioned fine as far as i can see.
you can try "partition magic" to merge the drives into one big drive, even though i wouldn't suggest it. and you need lots of patience.

there is some thing called computer management in administrative tools in the control panel. open that and navigate to storage and it gives you a pretty good picture of how the hard drive is .

edit: slattery already mentioned PQmagic

This?

It is a Symantec program, so I would've thought it was safe etc...

Why wouldn't you suggest it? Not fool proof?

merging that big a drive can take upto 4-5 hours if all goes well,

then all the drive letters have to be changed so that all the programs and the shortcuts works fine. (i believe this is supported in PQmagic)

and if you computer freezes, or if u loose electricity and the computer restarts, or if the SW goofs up, you can say goodbye to 160GB of data.

Ouch, so I don't really have another solution then other than to buy a new hardrive or stick it out... as that does sound rather risky.

i would really suggest buying a second hdd there quite cheap. £50 or so will buy you at least 250gb.
then just install it which is a lot easier than it sounds, then get windows to format it and just start filling it up.you can leave windows on the existing hdd and move any pics music etc to the new one
if your running close to filling your existing drive your probably gonna need the space in the long run anyway

I am looking to get Vista, it's is one of those things I really want at the moment. Could I buy a new hardrive, put it in the other one's place and install Vista straight onto that? Disregarding the other completely, obviously I would back up any files I want to keep first...

dont see why not, a good way to get it sorted. you sound like you ll have a fair bit to back up if you ve used nearly of your 160gb drive

Well not really the whole 160GB at all, just that the 'main' C drive which is used as the main drive for windows, documents etc is all but a bit full. Backup I obviously don't use and the Local Disk E drive for my games and music.
