Hi All,

maybe some of you UK guys can help me out here. Im in Australia. i sent my P990i phone to the UK to get my firmware CDA upgraded. unfortunately my courier company has told me that my phone has been under customs hold for the past 1.5 weeks.

anyone can hazard a guess why they have put a hold on it.. is there some kind of regulation on electronic goods coming into the country etc etc..??

getting a bit edgy now.. since i havent been able to use my phone properly when i first bought it and i hope it doesnt get lost.. otherwise i will have to go thru all the insurance Bullsh#$%t..

Regards

sending a phone a few thousands km away isnt a very good idea.
i want to buy a hard disk for my pc, but im hesitating because is 300 km away and i dont think the transporters will keep in mind the "fragile" sticker.

Any package can be inspected by HM Revenue & Customs. They usually check a percentage of packages going through a handling centre, and the recipient may have to pay VAT and import duty on it. However, if the package contains only an item being imported for repair, which is being exported again, and the package is marked as such (v. important), no tax or duty is payable. It's possible your package is one that has been identified for inspection - HMRC are also interested in drugs, explosives etc. - though I've never heard of packages being held in this way.

Most couriers will pay any VAT/duty and then bill the recipient later (unless the sender has agreed to pay). The only time I've seen packages delayed is where couriers are trying to get the recipient to pay up front before delivery. There is something of a scam that goes on - courier pays VAT/duty upfront and then adds a hefty 'admin charge'.

One supplier I know in Australia changed courier because every package he sent was being charged admin fees for 'customs clearance'.

I'd ask your courier for a more detailed explanation, or email HMRC.

@antichrist, don't be too concerned. Hard drives can take acceleration forces of 250g+ when not operating, and that would require throwing it against the ground very hard, and on purpose

@OZDazza, customs can be a pain sometimes, really. I saw you post elsewhere that your phone was on its way to UK and I was waiting to see that it arrived so I could suggest sending it back to me when the debranding was done as I'm heading back to Sydney as I write this and I could bypass all that for you.

next time maybe...
