I think that the mobile phone industry is a bit annoying when it comes to naming their models. If you compare to the car industry, there are certain model names, like Volkswagen Golf (Rabbit in the U.S. I think), Toyota Corolla, Ford Escort, Volvo V70, Mercedes 500 SLK, etc. By the model name, you immediately know what the type of car it is, if it's a small or big one, if it's a station wagon or a sports car. The models are updated yearly, with improvements (bug fixes) and new features (new functionality). This way, it's easier to know ehat to look for when you want a newwe one, and easier to compare. With mobile phones, it's a djungle of numbers, that tend to be longer and longer for each new model in order not to collide with an existing model number. Some manufactirers, like

, do keep some kind of system, like the W prefix for

phones, Z for clamshells, P for pda's etc, and Nokia has their N-series for high-end models but it's not quite enough.
