Just wondering, how does one go about using wifi to transfer files from my laptop to my P990? I can do it with cable and bluetooth, but surely its possible to do it using wireless connection? Friend has XDa windows mobile device, and says its impossible? Surely not?

now you mention it...
never thought about it;

bluetooth got file-transfer profile, like it could have a profile to stream audio (a2dp)

wifi is like an infrastructure, to exhange data/information
like a wired network you can transfer files, but your manifacture of your network card doesn't provide any tools to exhange files.
the infrastructure/network gives you the option to carry data.
but it requires a platform to transfer it; like ftp or p2p

i do think wifi is like that, it's just an option to connect.
but how you transfer you data is to the user.

yes think so..

For what you say, then its more a matter of finding an application that will do it? rather than this being a hardware issue.
In the network settings it has infrastructure and ad-hoc settings? Not sure what ad-hoc does, but i wonder if it allows 2 devices to connect directly? Say a laptop and phone, rather than sending data via a wireless router?
Surely we aren't the first to wonder?

One way I've used it so set up a web server on the computer and then use opera on the phone to download files. Works great, but requires a bit of work before being able to download. For two way transfer (I.E. from the phone to the computer too), I'd use an FTP server instead. I think there are FTP clients for UIQ3 available.

interesting solution firetech,

probably a bit beyond my own personal skills.. understand what you say, just doubt i could implement it.

but you'd think there are more straight forward ways?

I generally just use bluetooth to beam files back and forward, but its a bit slow compared with wifi.

good idea havn't though about that

might be a solution;
download a tool called; apache2triad (free ware)
this will install and configue a full working webserver on your pc.
there are many free scripts available, that allow you to transfer files from you pc (or phone) to the webserver (your pc/laptop)

@himlims_nl:
Regarding upload to a webserver it works, but is a bit slow compared to FTP. Also, there are lots of simple FTP server applications for windows, just google round and find one that fits you. The other problem is of course FTP client for the phone...

EDIT: Opera (Web) can apparently download files through FTP, but not upload.
