clearly their branding of phones using known names from Sony have contributed to this growth. i.e. the walkman name and the cybershot name

those combined with the different approach to the mobile market IMHO has made people more interested in SE phones.

probably also the availability of low end products has allowed people to be introduced to SE and those people have then become somewhat loyal to the brand

First their great understanding of the market. They know their target group and they cater for them well, i.e. not bloating phones with difficult to use features. So this gives SE a good portfolio with focused phones for different people.

Also, the user friendliness of their menus is very attractive to the public IMO.

I think they thought about multimedia quality and that's the most used day2day feature. Which helped them a LOT.
Though they've forgot 'bout their joystick quality

Here in the ME (a very large Nokia-friendly market) SE is slowly making progress due to the K750 which is very popular here.

What didn't help them is the P990. A lot of people here curse that phone.

What are big sellers here of SE (not in any order):

1. K750
2. K800
3. Z610
4. K320
5. W850/610/700

The more high-end phones like the M600 and the P990 are not that popular, however compared to Nokia everything seems meaningless and I really hate that.

Kuwait (and the ME) is such a big market for Nokia that I recently found out they opened a development office right in Kuwait to develop local-market software. One such is this thing called 'Zoom' that magnifies the caller id on incoming calls.

Sony's branding and product marketing and Ericsson's wireless wizardry.

I think both companies have learned from the mistakes of when they were independent mobile divisions. The T68i and the T610 were the first big hitters - colourful screens, easy to use menus, good design and feature rich (for their time). No Sony Branding then.

Walkman music phones have done particularly well and have managed to capture the consumers imagination more than any other mobile companies version of 'the music-phone'.

Cybershot branding was built on the success of the K750i which was incredibly good when launched and still tops the sales charts now (in the UK).

At the moment is still gunning for the mid-range so more growth is on the cards for the coming year - possibly at the expense of the traditional high-end devices which are few and far between right now.

i must say that is climbing way to high in DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. ppl are getting low, mid and high end phones like if they were for free. J100, K310, K750, W300 and K790 are the phones that are rocking there days. some ppl are getting these phones just to say that the have it(in this case, K790, the more expensive of the mentioned above). the phones are easy to use, thats a reason of their popularity.
