Microsoft plans to announce tomorrow that it will submit its HD Photo image format to a standards body. Making HD Photos a neutral industry standard, not just a Microsoft technology, is a significant step in the company's ambitious plan to establish a higher-quality replacement for today's ubiquitous JPEG standard.

I don't think it will be the end of JPEG. Think of all the existing devices that only support the JPEG format. Virtually every single program and hardware displaying an image, support JPEG. Remeber that Adobe have pushed the
DNG format as an alternative to the RAW-formats used by manufactures of digital cameras. None of the big-name manufactures like Sony, Nikon or Canon has swiched from their proprietary format to DNG.
The great thing about the new image format is of course the support for 16 og 32 bit images compared to only 8 bit in JPEG. Other advantages is better compression and less memory usage during compression.
