> Real Artificial Intelligence - Soon? Ethically Right?
Bookmark topic
Now we've all seen those fabulous robot/artificial intelligence related movies such as AI, I Robot and even Terminator, but could what we're seeing on the screen be reality soon?
Source: BBC
An ethical code to prevent humans abusing robots, and vice versa, is being drawn up by South Korea.
Is this 'ethical code' not the same thing we've seen in films?
We all know of the robots that assist in building things such as cars and whatnot, but read the following - I quote from the same artical...
ASIMOV'S LAWS OF ROBOTICS
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law
"A recent government report forecast that robots would routinely carry out surgery by 2018."
"The Ministry of Information and Communication has also predicted that every South Korean household will have a robot by between 2015 and 2020."
Now this is the best... or worst... one:
"In the 21st Century humanity will coexist with the first alien intelligence we have ever come into contact with - robots."
"Last year a UK government study predicted that in the next 50 years robots could demand the same rights as human beings."
Now if it were to go this far, does it mean that they would be so advanced and intelligent that they would be another race that we should acknowledge and respect just as we do ourselves?
If they could demand rights, they would have emotions, feelings and beliefs right? Could this possibly mean that a new era of racism would start? And so then would it be right and fair to go this far with artificial intelligence?
Personally I am facinated by all this, but there is a feeling inside me that if we did practically create a new race that we would co-exist with, that had emotions, feelings and beliefs, would "our" intelligent artificial slaves stand for this? Would they rebel? Would they fight us?
Maybe I'm looking into all this too far, but some how I just don't think so, one day this could be so. Could Terminator or Mr Smith (Matrix) get their revenge?
Here's something else...
Impressive
A prototype miniature robot that can be inserted through an incision to perform medical procedures inside the body. The beetle-shaped robot, developed by researchers at Ritsumeikan University in Japan, has a small camera, sensors and a drug delivery device. It weighs just five grams.
Your views/opinions/thoughts?

I watched I-Robot the other night on Channel 4 and its was amazing but a bit unnerving too.
I don' t think I would like a robot operating on me while I was awake but I think robot is the wrong word to use because robots build cars etc.
What I find weird are humanoids - like the ones made recently in Japan that have human-like skin and features and even when they are sitting still they blink, fidget and twitch just like humans do.
One witness described them as being described them as being 'very unnerving' and creepy - like this one:
This one was so frightening people actually ran screaming into the road:
Sorry that was actually Christina Aguillerarararar...

Wow that's pretty impressive, I think I've seen here before.
I saw a documentry once in which a man built a robot that looked pretty real too, obviously a robot (not like the one above) but still good, that he could have a simple conversation with. Also it could sense his feelings by looking at his face and detecting face muscle movement and position etc as well as tears.
Also I read somewhere that in the next 100 years it is more likely that the most powerful nations such as the USA etc will be using Mechwarriors than it is that we will have colonised another planet. Here is one if you don't know what they are...

Well of course there is still a way to go, but certainly on Earth we're not at all far off.

in all honesty..
man is the biggest danger to anything in this world. so no robts are going to be roaming the world unless we tell them too.
and if we tell them to do it we deserve the consequence!

@Goldenface, read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_Valley
The Uncanny Valley is a hypothesis about robotics concerning the emotional response of humans to robots and other non-human entities.
It basically says that sypmathy towards a humanoid figure drops sharply in a stage the figure looks too human to be perceived as something else, but too artificial to pass as a human - so it looks weird and repulsive..

Thanks for that link - that explains a lot.
While mechanical looking robots can be articulated to do many things, people are comfortable with them as humans know their limits, but the more and more they begin to look human, then they no longer look like machines and become completely unfamiliar - because it is not known what their actually limits are.
Will there be a time in the future when humanoid robots are commonplace?
Probably. Its one area that seems to advancing in 'leaps and bounds' pardon the pun. Most people have seen the Honda ad where the robot is able to navigate stairs and run around with its arms stretched pretending to be an aeroplane
Great stuff ,but would you want it to patrol your house clearing up after you and taking the dog for a walk? Not quite sure about that one.
