I have a Z550i and I download 5MB+ files quite often with the browser...

The problem is that the browser closes everytime I close the flip... And its a real pain to keep the phone open for so long (I can't keep it in my pocket for example...)

SO... is there any way to prevent the browser from closing everytime I close the flip?

It's easy. But at your own risk.
When you close your flap, a switch or a button gets pressed, conveys to the phone to close apps. You could take the phone to a local phone service shop and have the button or switch removed. I have had done it successfully on my friend's samsung X-640 at the service shop.
