Hi

The problem is:
We have a new Day Time Saving time in North America this year (starts 2 weeks earlier and ends 2 weeks later than usual). This morning, the phone received a updated time when I turned it on.

After the time is updated, I was asked to pick my current location. It only showed the cities in South America like Kingstown, Caracas, etc. Anyway, I picked Caracas for the hack of it.

And then I checked the time setting on my phone, the time zone was set to S.A. Western instead of Eastern Standard Time (EST). By the way, I am in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

So I tried to set the current time and location back to EST manuelly. BUT, the time in the other cities were incorrected. For example, it showed 13 hours defferent between Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (EST) and Hong Kong. It is supposed to be 12 hr different during DTS period.

I called SE hotline, and they said it had nothing to do with the phone because it is my service provider (Fido Canada) to update the time and time zone info.

But when I called my service provider, they said they have updated the new DTS time on their service.

Just a thought here. Do you guys think the firmware on the phone is not updated for the new DTS in North America? Cos Windows XP and Vista systems, even WM5 or WM6 devices, needed to be updated/download patches for the new DTS standard.

I don't think the PHONE is doing the change. So nothing like with windows!

This automatic update is your service provider with AutoUpdateTimeZone.

I could not even find the Summertime/Wintertime setting in my p990. In all other phones you manually check either summer or winter time and the the clock changes.

I had to manually change the time to 1 hour ahead.

Is it possible that I just could not find this or that SE screwed up another thing.

It is there... in Flip Open click on your clock to go into the Time menu (where you set up alarms etc.) then click on the clock itsel to bring up the Time and Date settings, then you can go to the pull-down menu and select "Set updates" which will allow to to set DST settings...

Hope this helps.

I called SE again, and I was told that the software or the firmware on the phone is not up-to-dated for the new standard of the DTS in North America. And also I was told the time will be showed correctly after 3 weeks. (FYI, new Day Time Saving starts 2 weeks earlier this year, and it will end 2 weeks later than usual.).

Therefore, I asked the technical support personnel when the Sony Ericsson (SE) will release an update/new firmware/patches for the new DTS standard in N. America, and he answered me that SE have no plan on updates for the new DTS so far

I AM REALLY SUPPRISED & DISAPPOINTED if what I was told is true. (And I believe he told me the fact also cos Microsoft has already released new update/patches for their Windows Mobile 5 & 6 devices since Dec 2006) P990i is the latest Smartphone from SE. How can be no update/firmware/patches for the new DTS?! Customers have to wait for 3 weeks to get a correct time setting on your latest Smartphone is ridiculous. Microsoft has already released new update/patches for their Windows Mobile 5 & 6 devices since Dec 2006. And I haven’t heard Nokia devices have problem with the new changes at all.

Thanks a lot. Finally found this setting there. I think the setting is basically on Manual and one needs to set it to Automatically set Timechanges. Don't know if that really works but if so and SE is not releasing a patch or FW update for this the they suck even more.

However, the last fw R9EC did update the calendar also to R4 something and perhaps that included a patch for this changed US time change!

Anybody out there that has NOT set the phone to update via server but set it to Automatically set TimeChanges? Did the phone change?

Or then in 3 weeks... will it change?

Interesting...

I updated the time manually, changing one hour ahead.
but I guess that in 3 weeks the phone will adjust automatically if set that way.
So I will adjust the hour back at that time. no biggie.

as far as appointments, since the PC had the correct time, no screw ups.

It is a pain if you travel around the world......

I AM REALLY SUPPRISED & DISAPPOINTED. P990i is the latest Smartphone from SE. How can be no update/firmware/patches for the new DTS?! Customers have to wait for 3 weeks to get a correct time setting is ridiculous.

It seems SE having problem on their after-sale support/service on their phones. For the other major mobile phone manufacturers such as Nokia, Palm, etc have already provided the latest update for their phones/smartphones/PDA regards to the new daylight saving rule long time ago.

I don't think it is right to call P990i is a smartphone at all; it can't even tell me the correct time.

I think I will have to think twice next time before I get a SE phone. Maybe I am better off to stay with Windows Mobile OS device next time.

I think this whole thing with the daylight starting early and not being supported by ALL the devices it's really blown out of proportion.
This change just been adopted and guess what, the world will not jump to meet this one change. It will be addressed in little time. for ext go around.
Come on, let's be realistic.

I changed the time zone to EST, and all the appointments lined up in my P990.
And no changes were applied to the Outlook appointments, so I am good.
