My laptop has been running slowly lately, so I've taken a couple of steps to redress that. Now I'd really appreciate your help/suggestions to get it running smoothly again.

1. I have done the following:

a. Full system scan for virus (using Norton 2007)
b. Full system scan for spy/adware (using Norton 2007, is Norton good enough or do I need a dedicated spy/adware detector?)
c. Defragmented the drive

2. I want to do the following:

a. View and control which programmes run at start-up (I'm running XP SP2). How do I do this?

3. Does anyone have any other suggestions which I could implement, to make my laptop run as fast as it used to.

Thanks for your time, and I appreciate any suggestions you might have.

2. Click on the Start button and then Run. In the box typr msconfig. A new window will open. On the top click the far right "startup" tab. In there you can disable what starts up when you start windows.

I'd also recommend this great little program, make sure you install all updates before you run the scan. No better!

Delete all temporary files

Manually check your computer for crap that you don't want and remove/uninstall it

Make sure Spybot, anti-virus and firewall are up-to-date

Spyware scan and remove, followed by a full computer virus scan

Disk clean-up followed by defragmentation

Restart computer

Spybot - great little program.

Could get rid of Norton - it's notorious for itself slowing down computers. Try a different anti-virus software if possible and see if it runs more quickly.
