Hi all, currently I own an M600 and couldn't be more happier using it. The keyboard took a while to get used to but now I couldn't live without it. The lack of camera is not a problem, and the Today! screen is just awesome. However because I have a new job, I need to have phone that has a built in camera because I will be traveling a lot, taking simple documentation and don't want to bother carrying extra stuff on my journey.

My best candidate to upgrade from the M600 is obviously P990, as it has the same everything as M600 plus camera which I need. However, searching around the net, I found that P990 doesn't have Today! screen like M600, even on the flip open mode. I read this on various forums such as a local mobile phone forum (my country) and se-nse.net. Is this true or not? Because Today! screen is like the main selling point for me, and the lack of such feature could be a real deal breaker.

I need keyboard, built-in camera and some kind of Today! screen. Coming from owning a plethora of Windows Mobile devices, M600 just simply best all of it according to my own experience.

P.S. I don't like 3rd party program, so application such as handy day is no go for me. For personal reasons, I like everything came straight out of the box.

Well... It has some of the Today screen functionality (a list of todays calendar entries, unread messages, Tasks and missed calls), but they are not shown on the standby screen like on the M600. You just have to click a button (on screen in Flip open, D-pad right in Flip closed) to see it.

Ouch... Somewhat of a deal breaker. If I buy the P990, I will take off the keypad from day one, just because I'm a keyboard whore. So can I remap a physical button to replace the right d-pad function? Or can this "status" screen be displayed as a default background? I can manage to live with clicking a button to display the "status" screen, but I don't like the concept of taking the stylus and tapping the screen to display it.

@Midi_Amp

I'm afraid the simple answer to your question is No not yet if ever, if you read through the P990 threads unfortunately there is a lot to read your concerns and disappointment have been voiced by many others for a long time now.

My oh my... Guess I need to look around more before making a final purchase of the phone, cos' I really need the camera. Thank you for the input, I'll try to rummage around the P990 threads... Kind of lazy because there's just too much of it, and I'm feeling that the P990 doesn't get the love SE expect it to have.

I may have missed somthing here as i have never used the M600. But I have the today functionality with the flip off.

It's one of the feature which I gained by going to generic firmware and getting rid of the Orange crap.

You can remap the hardware button to Activity menu and then just tap with your thumb (I have farnkfurters for fingers, so if I can then most can) the today button.

Also, you don't actually have to remap the hardware button, as it's on your desktop by default with the generic FW.

I hope this helps???

I'm not sure if I will get booed at for this, but I think the better device for you (since you seem to miss only the camera on the M600) would be the E61i?

I have heard rumors of a M600 upgrade that includes a camera; but there is no release date and its a rumor. The E61i is a bit less 'buzzware'
