Hi all, I managed to install DivX player for my W950i. Below are my feelings about it:

1. First and foremost, I am really glad that there is a DivX player for UIQ3. Before getting the W950i, I was mainly using Lonelycat's Smartmovie player for my then P910 for movie viewing. I thought I had to forgo all the smartmovies I converted. So happy that all those movies which I had converted for my ex-p910 are very watchable on my W950i now. OOOO YYYEEESSSS....

2. The response of the software in starting the movie, fast-forwarding, back-tracking is very much faster than Smartmovie player. Like the Smartmovie player, you fast-forward or back-track by sliding the scroll on top of the screen left or right. On Smartmovie player, once you scroll right to fast-forward, it would take about half a minute or more before the movie plays. But now with the Divx player, it only takes like 3-5 seconds for the movie to play. What a pleasant difference!!! I wonder if it is because the W950i is using a 4GB flash HD which is definitely much faster than the 2GB MSDP used on my ex-910.

3. There is no time lag between the video and the audio. This problem is quite common in Smartmovie player. I remembered I had to adjust the time lag in the options menu to synchronise the video and audio quite a no. of times. DivX player has no such problem... so far...

4. If you have purchased a video converter such as the one by Lonelycats Game, the good news is, you can continue to use it to encode movies for the new W950i. I had also purchased a converter - Forty-Two DVD VX Plus - previously, cos I am a Mac user, to convert my DVDs into DivX formats for my phone. I am happy that I can continue to do that also, as they are playable on the new DivX player. The only fall short is that the W950i has a QVGA screen (ie 320x240 pixels) wheras the said encoders encode movies to 320x208 pixels according to P910's screen. DivX player will automatically stretch the movie to fill screen. But I feel there are very minor pixelation, though not easily noticable.

5. You need to switch backlighting from "automatic" to "on" and click off power-saving on the W950i before launching DivX player. Otherwise, when you are watching movie, the phone keeps dimming its light and go into blank screen power saving mode.

The above are my feels about DivX Player. I hope whoever who uses it on the UIQ3 platform will enjoy it as much as I do.

Hmmm, I wonder if that has more to do with the diff. between p910 and 950 than with divx v. Smartmovie? I have currently both players on my e61, and I wouldn't if either of them took 30 secs to forward! There's just about zero difference between the 2, but that's on a nokia... I watched "terrorstorm" on the train a couple of days ago - almost 2 hrs. When I'd finished, I was looking for a particular scene towards the end - it took about 2-3 secs to forward 1 1/2 hrs on smartmovie...?

I have just installed Lonely Cats Game's Smartmovie for UIQ3. Fast forwarding is now very fast. I guess it has to do with the flash HD W950i uses.

What about P990 users who still use the MSPD? Does fast forwarding in Smartmovie take a long time for you guys? If it does not, then it must be the UIQ OS difference between UIQ2 and UIQ3.

I have to question your encoding on the smartmovie videos you were using. I tried using say flaskmpeg and virtual dub to convert in to Xvid and the delays you mention were present and very annoying. However if you used the converter supplied with smart movie and used a sensible bit rate the file sizes were smaller and the play back was amazingly smooth! True the vid quality was better using the conversion through other methods but the sound synch and the blank time was increased significantly.

Not a big fan of Divx i'm sticking to Smart Movie the processor is still too slow to run anything with amazing quality just yet.

its not dodgy if you use videos properly encoded, and save the app in internal memory instead of ms pro duo

also if better quality pro duo“s will provide better results on the video performance
