Sony Ericsson have just announced the W580i, which is yet another Walkman phone. OK, so it looks great, but I'm getting worried they're turning into a one-trick pony.
Just as Motorola relied too heavily on the RAZR (and have now posted a loss for the first quarter of 2007), Sony Ericsson are in danger of relying too much on Walkman and CyberShot phones that are good, but not exactly innovative.
I blog about phones a lot, and I realised when posting about the W580i that I was getting bored writing about it. Then it occurred to me that I can't remember the last time I got excited about a Sony Ericsson phone, which was the same feeling I got with Motorola and its endless RAZR variants.
So I checked BlogPulse to see how many people are getting excited about their phones around the blogosphere, and the results aren't pretty. You can see the graphs I got here:

This is worrying. Sony Ericsson are turning in a healthy profit at the moment, but so too were Motorola at the height of the RAZR - and now look at them!
Is there anything new we can look forward to from Sony Ericsson that'll have the same kind of Wow factor as Nokia's N95, or are they getting dangerously close to doing a Motorola?

I agree with you. Its getting boring and each phone is just the same phone in another skin. Nokia always seems to come up with something new and exciting and sometimes original. I have not purchased another SonyEricsson for a while now. I dont like the new designs that really horrible W880i its just another Walkman in a thin horrible design i really hate the back of it too in red. I also dont like SonyEricssons slow chip which makes menu navigation and other tasks slow not like Nokia series 40.

is already going Nokia's way was when they started to manyfacture fones in - proliferation . . . . just like the TREND with Nokia, more on quantity rather than QUALITY
It is on the hands of the buying-consumers NOW wheter to BUY or wait for BETTER quality-made fones . . .

I'd call it a lull, not a full-blown disaster or crisis. They've done quite well with the Walkman line of phones and I expect them to keep this line in motion. The K-line of phones is strong as well, especially with "Sofia" in the offing. The K810i was a fairly minor update, just something to tide us over until the K850 really wows us. Low end phones have been a priority lately as well. Those of us who frequent these forums are probably too über-geek to really care about the entry level offerings, but they sell and sell big.
I'm personally about to pick up the new K550i as a backup/replacement/alternate toy to my K790i. Quad band, smaller form factor, and smooth lines with a flush mounted camera have me ready to pull the trigger on the K550i. I just have to have one. All that has kept me from searching one out anywhere rather than waiting impatiently for one in a retail store is the the rumored M610i. Adding a camera to the sexy M600 with it's Symbian OS is sounding like the perfect phone.
Oh, who am I kidding?! We all know I'm eventually going to have both.
I think the only place where SE is really falling down is with the P990i. Seems like firmware issues just aren't getting fixed. Am I simply seeing too many negative comments and getting a jaded view? The 990 looked like the perfect phone/pda combo but it sounds like they haven't gotten it quite right yet.

Marketing guys, SE is not in decline, it's actually having its most successful years ever.
But I'm sure they'll start catering to the high end again. Just read Elena's specs.

sony ericsson are focusing on more low end phones to gain more market share, more profit so that in the future they can provide a wider range of high end offerings which nokia is able to do with its huge market share. So think of it as a way to bring better offerings to the table in 08 even Q4 of 07. Bravia is still in the pipeline dont forget. Also we havent seen a highend phone from SE as yet so we are all speaking abit too soon - yes its unusual for SE and other brands have already but its just there new strategy. Sofia, Elena, Maria etc comming up!

true. the best example is n95 with gps. se doesn't even have 16 mill color displays phones.

IMHO YES is the answer, they may well be increasing market share and even profitability but at what cost?. The quality that Ericsson stood for is being eroded and they are taking far to long to bring any quality top end innovative handsets to market and seem determined to keep churning out more pretty identical handsets with a few cosmetic tweaks nothing new and certainly nothing special.
All these rumoured phones of the last few months have all so far failed to be announced never mind have confirmed launch dates. If they launch the next series of UIQ devices with the same problems and not ready for market as the first batch even most of the hardened SE supporters are going to start going elsewhere and sorry but 1 5 Mega pixel camera phone is hardly mind blowing either as in reality the step up from 3.2 Mega Pixels is going to be know where as amazing as some of you seem to believe it really is just marketing plain and simple.
The only new innovative phone is the W880 as it really is reduced in size but that is it so far and it's specs are hardly mind blowing either they could of done so much more with it IMO.
