> Sony Ericsson dragged into Bluetooth Case

Sony Ericsson, Apple, DELL, and five other technology companies have been dragged into the huge court case over Bluetooth patents.

The case is being bought by a non-profit organisation connected to the University of Washington against Matsushita, Samsung and Nokia. Other defendants since added include Logitech, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Plantronics. With names like these involved, it is clear that if the Washington Research Foundation wins, it could bring down the wireless technology industry. So far the foundation, which has generated more than $150 million for the University of Washington, is asking for money damages and a court order barring the sale of products that use the patented technology. The court action is targeted at products with chips made by the British outfit CSR, which the group says is using its Bluetooth technology without permission. Those based on Broadcom technology, which paid for a licence from the Foundation, will not be touched.

After 5 years since BT has been introduced, they now wake up that they want money.
Looks like a big scam to rip of the phone manufacturers.

I really don't get where you get this idea they are in the wrong from, first off Bluetooth started being developed by a consortium in 1999 and due to many problems encountered actually started releasing products in Q1 2001.
If you read what has been said the University is not claiming to have invented Bluetooth but the implementation of it in a chip design and as they have already generated $150 million in revenue i doubt this is disputed.
This is simply about infringement of thier chip design and implementation and if the big boys have stolen it they should quite rightly be made to pay. Also as it is a University i would imagine thier credibility and integrity is going to higher than that of money grabbing profit makeing companies. I certainly know who i am more likely to believe as big business has a habit of shafting and stealing tech from the small guy.

Actually, that's wrong. Bluetooth was invented by an engineer working for Ericsson AB in Sweden, in 1994.
The Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) was formed in 1998, consisting of just IBM, Intel, Nokia, Toshiba and Ericsson. The Bluetooth 1.0 specification was released in 1999. In 2000 the first consumer products hit the market, with the Ericsson headset and phone adapter.

Actually it was two engineers but didn't undergo development at that time and the first devices didn't work properly either which is why commercial deployment was delayed from 1999 to actual commercial release but lets not start squabbling over petty historical facts. As in reality it has nothing to do with this legal action against the companies for infringement of copyright and non payment of license fees.

When I read that post by Axxxr I was concerned about the possible ramifications for the BT Special Interest Group and BT products in general.
But since I read
this I'm really worried. Matsushita allegedly have a history of corrupt practices in the US.
It's a long article but worth reading through to the end.
And it's as damning of former US administrations as it is of K. Matsushita.
