Been doing research into this and have reached these conclusions.
For maximum battery life, switch off 3g & wifi, no imap idle email, no activesync, no blackberry. I have found bluetooth doesn't make that much difference if you switch it on or off; but if its always connected to a device or always visible then it will shorten battery life.
This should give about 5 hours talktime but still nowhere near SE's claimed time. Bit pointless having a p990 if you do all this but sometimes its not possible to always be charging your phone!
3g seems to be the greatest drain on the battery with activesync running a close second - it can drain your fully charged battery in about 8 hours - pretty impressive.

to switch off 3g in a umts fone seems a bit pointless for me...

I agree, if you have 3G coverage. But if not, then it makes sense to have the 3G off.

8 hours for a p990? Thats rubbish.

I presume using 2 sim cards will also drain the battery power faster?

Don't I know it. However, if you have activesync and access to an exchange server you can see for yourself - it makes the phone unusable unless you are permamently charging it - and then of course there's the bug that stops the p990 charging when a new email comes in via activesync !
O2 have made a formal support request today to SE on my behalf - we'll see what the response brings

I say it simply. If you have 3G coverage then simply switch off 3G when you dont really need it to save power. If i am not on the internet for a while or doing normal GSM stuff like texting and voice then i switch it off. Obviously if you have no 3G then thats that. I am lucky i got solid 3G and GSM where i live on Orange.

Definitely turn off the 3G if you don't need it!

the coverage of your operator does have a great effect at the stand-by
when you have 1-2 stripes, it must stress the network more often to keep connected
compared to 4-5 stripes, it doesn't communicate with the network that often. this results in a longer standby time.
i tested this with two brand gew w810 phones. 1 had maximum cover other one nearly nothing. the one with low signal went out much faster
