Can anyone explain how can a phone be blocked to make and receive calls but not sms?
I bought a second hand K800i recently, in portugal. I knew it was unlocked (it worked on all 3 networks in portugal) and that it was imported from some other country (unknown).
2 days afterwards I flew to London where I tried to use it in roaming. I could receive and send sms (through Vodafone UK, since I have a Vodafone PT SIM) but later on noticed that I could make any calls... when I dialled the number I would hear 2 bips and the call wouldn't even make through.
I tried the same SIM on another phone and everything worked fine. My network operator (Vodafone PT) told me they didnt' detected any anomally in the phone so it must be some problem related to the phone itself.
I also tried a UK T-mobile SIM and it wouldn't even register the SIM.
Does anybody know what must be wrong here?

Your phone is probably blocked, because it's reported stolen (for real or as part of an insurance fraud) in the UK.
I'm afraid you cant't solve this yourself, can't you contact the seller ?

I can, in fact I did contact him already and he told me he was not aware of this problem and that he would return my money if I want to. I'm just trying to know more about this issue. wouldn't a blocked (black-listed) device be blocked in several countries?

Possible, but not for sure, could be insurance fraud also and, as we've seen here lately, there are some other reasons, why a phone can get blocked.
