The "best" Cybershot phone we have from is the K790a. The "best" phone is the W610i. Is that it? Is that as good as it gets for us poor Americans, for a good long while? No K810a? No W880a? (There obviously won't be a W950a, dammit!)

Between automobiles and mobile phones, I'm ready to live in Europe as an expatriate

Hey why can't you just import them from UK or rest of Europe,
surely it works out alot cheaper then moving doesn't it? ;-0

Besides I can say the same but not with phones..
the likes of Clinique for instance The Lotion 125ml £27.99 here

$21.00 in USA thats bloomin is awful

Things are cheaper abroad then what we pay here you know stay where you are

The K550i is quad-band. 2 MP camera vs. 3.2 MP, but it's a sweet little phone, very pocketable, and has everything the K790 has. Plus photoblogging.

W580 is still "coming soon," while the W610i (a higher-spec phone IIRC) is recently released.

K550i is nice, but it's no K790a.

I'd love to simply import an overseas phone, but if it lacks the 850 MHz band, I'm out of luck. Cingular relies heavily upon it, and T-Mobile customers roam on it. And that's basically it for our GSM carriers... Not to mention how different our 3G is from the rest of the world, 850/1750/1900 HSDPA vs. 2100 WCDMA.

I was wondering if I were to use a K800i in the US, Will i get alot of dropped calls? Also, which is better Cingular or T-Mobile( I have no interest in Verizon lol)? Thanks

Since the K800i lacks the 850 MHz band, I would go with T-Mobile, which exclusively uses 1900 MHz on its own towers.

However, know that T-Mobile doesn't quite have Cingular's coverage. So when you're roaming, it'll be on Cingular's network. And Cingular uses 850 MHz almost everywhere.

I would use T-Mobile myself, but my workplace is in the middle of one of their dead zones Nothing but Cingular and Verizon (ugh) where I work.

America's not all that bad, I mean you can get phones from SE and other phones not available in the US (except Japanese phones of course) through the import dealers. That is how I got my awesome W900i unbranded for 200 USD. And the best thing is that the phones you get through the import dealers are unlocked and unbranded.

Here in the wilds of central and northern New Jersey, plus NYC, T-Mobile's coverage is fantastic. My K790i has never once dropped a call. My new K550i is quad-band so roaming won't be an issue now, but truthfully it wasn't before with the K790i and it's lack of the 850 MHz band. Of course coverage is highly area-dependant so check the coverage maps each carrier has on their web site. Zoom in on your area to see how fully they cover your area and anywhere you're likely to find yourself. And get as many local first-hand reviews as you can find.
