Sony Ericsson outperformed Nokia as the largest vendor of 3G handsets in the Taiwan market in February, according to Steve Yeh, president of Sony Ericsson Taiwan.
Esato News
In an April 4 report, the Chinese-language Economic Daily News said that Sony Ericsson held a 40% share in the Taiwan 3G handset segment. The K610i, which was available in bundled sales starting at NT$3,990 (US$121), has been the top-selling 3G handset for three consecutive months, accounting for a 3.6% share in the market, Yeh indicated.Additionally, the ratio of the 3G handsets to the total handset market in Taiwan expanded to 26% in February from the 20% at the end of 2006, with shipments of 3G handsets likely to reach two million units by year-end 2007 and pushing the ratio to 30%, Yeh estimated. The competition between Nokia and Sony Ericsson will advance into the 3.5G segment starting in the third quarter when Nokia launches its N95 and Sony Ericsson introduces its Z750, according to market sources. The N95 and Z750 are both the first 3.5G handsets to be launched, respectively, by the vendors in the Taiwan market. On April 3, Sony Ericsson launched three handsets – the W610i, W200i and Z310i – in the Taiwan market, with suggested retail prices of NT$10,990, NT$6,900 and NT$4,980, according to company sources. source:

@boba- it is interesting to note that this is becoming a trend. Look at the UK and now Taiwan. Not too long ago nokia's stranglehold seemed impenetrable, not anymore. It starts by a country(ies) then worldwide. SE are definitely on the right track and it won't be long before they really close in on nokia.

when you're catching up - or trying to -growth is easy!!! And we normally always look at Taiwan for guidance? In parts of eastern europe opera's the most popular browser... Worldwide: under 5 percent... Know whatta mean!?

@boba- that's the problem right there- complacency. It seems quite big and it is a huge market share, but SE is growing faster than any manufacturer and it doesn't look like there's going to be any let up.
