Hi everyone,

I am traveling to Belgium (Liege) from California for a couple months (school) and want to utilize my P990 as much as possible. Well, mainly trying to use it as a 3G modem and a translator, or anything else you can suggest. I know many people here are from Belgium and they are all NICE, so I will just fire away.

1. I probably don't get internet for my room (stupid cheap housing). I assume 3G is rather good in Belgium (unlike in the US), so I wonder if I can subscribe for cell phone service with 3G and hook my p990 up with my laptop (bluetooth or cable) so I can access internet with my laptop.

a) Anyone try P990 be a 3G modem?
b) Which 3G service provider I should use? Any unlimited data plan?

2. I speak little French(I rather asked my french class teacher about common french hand signals than really learn the language; I am language-challenged) and Liege is a French area. So any French/English dictionary, translator for P990?

3. Any overall tips in surviving in Liege? (ie: where not to go after certain time)

4. Are wifi hot spots popular in Liege? I need my internet BAD.

Thanks
devil

Hi DevilHell,
To answer your 1st question, yes, the P990i does a superb job as a 3G modem, iin fact it is my primary source of internet connection at home, I'm using it as we speak. It does work a treat and is as fast as a broadband connection (if not faster in my case). Eventhough I'm not fromBelgium, I'm sure they have some sort of flat rate 3G plan, I do here in Malaysia. I'm paying a meagre USD$35 per month for it. As for your second question, I'm actually travelling to France later this month so I have been doing my fair share of translator shopping. I bought SlovoEd Eng-Fra Fra-Eng dictionary and find it to be quite useful if you want to read signs and documents in French. If you want a voice translator, Speereo and France2Go talking phrase book would come in very handy if you wish to communicate and don't know how to pronounce certain French words. Sorry I can't answer questions 3 and 4 since I'm not staying anywhere near Europe. Hope it's useful info to you and good luck with your studies

@mode, Osmano

Thanks for the replies. Glad to hear 3G modem is good, are you guys using bluetooth or cable connecting the laptop?

And I will definitely look into SlovoEd Eng-Fra Fra-Eng dictionary and possibly Speereo and France2Go.

Again thanks and now I just need to find a unlimited 3G plan with good connections in Belgium (and hopefully doesn't cost me an arm).

I use cable as well, helps with the long surfing hours with the usb charging feature esp when you're not at home and you don't have your charger with you

@ noblewolf
You might wanna check your mobile network settings and set it to 3G only if you require steady and uninterrupted speed or else it would switch to gprs (much slower) when the 3G network is a bit low. I usually get a maximum of arnd 52 kbps. It might also be the network provider though I think the latter is more likely the reason why you could only get 12 kbps

i would like to warn you to keep your P990i or anyother thing close to you.
in belgium alot of bad things happen. alot of foreign people from all over the world steal quick and easely. (and then they complain its not their fault the steal)
for example last summer a young guy was killed for refusing to give away his mp-3 player! crazy no doubt about it, but many of that stuff happens here.
so beware, and have a safe trip.
