Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a bit of advice now. I got the P990i on Vodafone just as it came out. I was lucky enough to get one of the first handsets into the Vodafone stores, so the firmware was not yet branded.

I loved the phone, but about 3 months after I got it, I got rid of it and now have a K800i. There were a few things that made me make the switch, and I'm wondering if anyone knows if these things have been solved since the handset was released.

Firstly, texting was a nightmare. I'm not sure how to explain this one. With all the other SE's I've had, including my K800, with predictive text you would enter the word you want and press space once highlighted. With the P990 it was almost like it would ignore you. Even if you had the word on the screen you wanted, if it had something else highlighted on the dropdown list of words, it would put that one in instead. (Doesn't make much sense, but someone might know what I mean).

Secondly, it suffered from a lot of crashes. The amount of times I would be late for work becuase it would reboot in the middle of teh night and the alarm wouldn't go off! It seemed like it would crash most often when on the internet.

Thirdly, and it sounds like a lot of people had this problem, but the audio seemed a lot quieter than my old P910. Even though I have only recently got the K800, my mate has just got the N95 (which I hate, as it's a Nokia), but I'm kinda missing the Symbian and WLAN, etc. I'm not tempted by the M600 or W950 due to lack of camera, but might be tempted to go back to a P990 if I know whjether some of the above problems have now been sorted with firmware upgrades.

Hi fadmbauer. A lot has changed actually but I can't be sure about the predictive text problem that you have since I never use that feature on this phone. I just feel that predictive text is supposed to help you type faster on normal numeric phone keypads whereas the P990 has an onboard QWERTY which can be used to type even faster than T9. Crashes are very rare now with the latest firmware at least on my phone anyway, just make sure you restart the phone at least once a week and you'll do fine, but in your case I think it was really bad and a firmware reflash would've definitely fixed it. As for the sound, never had a P910 so can't really compare, but I think it's as loud as my S700 so I'm not complaining. Hope I've shed some light, but you should ask again after the next firmware comes out, it's due anytime now

I have the latest firmware installed from SE.

1- the crashing does not happen as much

2-the predictive text is the same as before.

3-the audio is terrible, i can barely hear anyone.

The new R5 firmware is due out soon.

Reportedly there is a real improvement in multitasking, and the volume level has increased by 20% too.

I am still on R4, and I have never had a crash or reboot. I just use SMP to flush certain hungry apps (web, camera etc.) on flip close and it works a treat.

Look at the P910 firmware thread on my-symbian - all the details are there as we speak!

As for the SMS issue, I use HWR, so I can't comment on that at all.

The last official FW is R4B and the new FW is R5.i don't have any reboots with my FW,but the R5 is great and made the phone even more stable than before.but no one confirmed that the voice had been increased 20%?
so i believe you should wait the new FW and see the comments.

regards,

Music volume? Excellent!

I suppose that means the speakerphone is louder then, as it uses rear speaker?

I always found it so odd that the speakerphone volume was louder on the W810 for eg, used predominalty for entertainment, than the P990, used predominatly in a business environment, where you want louder SP.
