> Broadband challenge faces Britain
Bookmark topic
Time is running out to get the UK in shape to cope with the next wave of net use, says a report.
Tough decisions on how to encourage telecoms firms to build faster networks must be made within two years, warns the Broadband Stakeholder Group (BSG).
Without these networks the UK could suffer profound social and economic setbacks, says the industry group.
Taking no action could also mean that digital divisions across the UK become entrenched.
A spokesman for Virgin Media, formerly NTL/Telewest, said some of what the BSG was calling for was already available over cable. He added that Virgin Media's 10Mbps service will increase to 20Mbps from May this year and it is running trials of 50Mbps among some customers in Ashford, Kent.

Next wave?! The UK isn't yet up to todays standards just yet...
There are still many places around the UK that haven't yet got broadband at all.

At least I'm with BT so my net speed will keep up to date with new speeds and stuff.

Being a rather small country you would think getting everyone's speeds up would be easy compared with most other countries, but even people in the most remote places of the massive USA get better speeds, I know this because I have a lot of American online gaming friends etc, no matter where you are you have a connection that only a lucky few in the UK could ever have; and now with the news that American's could be looking at 100mb broadband by 2015... the maximum I can get for my area in the UK is 512kb, let alone the poor souls elsewhere that haven't even got broadband in their area.
