Is it possible to extend the video capture beyond 30 seconds?

You can do it by pressing settings then shoot mode. Select high quality. Or your memory is running out of space

I can shoot video past 30 seconds with mine so I'm inclined to believe it's relevant to how much memory you have left. Make sure your video settings are selected as save to memory card instead of to phone. Hope that helps.

The default setting is short so that you can send a video clip by MMS. One of the first things I do with a new phone is reset it to High Quality video.
I never send video by MMS anyway. Most people struggle to cope with recieving a picture message...

errr, thought i had this sorted. it appears that the default setting is for recording for messaging @ a fixed length of 30 seconds.
i can change to unlimited recording but it always reverts back to 30 seconds.
any way of permenantly setting to unlimited?
