I just read a news saying that optus Australia is testing 3g on 900mhz and telstra has 3g on 850 mhz. As far as I know Se and Nokia make their 3g phones to run on 2100 mhz. My question is if most of the 3g phones are built to run on 2100mhz,why optus is testing the 900mhz 3g? Noone would be able to use it since most phones will not have the capability. Anyone knows something that I don't? Thanks before.

The new 3G/HSDPA networks can be used in the GSM frequencies, for example 900 and 850MHz. The biggest benefit of this is that the lower frequencies have better coverage than the higher frequencies for 3G/UMTS (2100MHz). So to cover a wide area with the network the lower frequencies are much better.

This latest GSA survey confirms and identifies 254 HSDPA-enabled devices launched in the market comprising 104 handsets, 54 PC datacards and modules (including several supporting HSUPA), 43 HSDPA-enabled notebooks, 19 USB modems, 1 dual-interface ExpressCard/34 & USB modem, 29 wireless routers, 3 Personal Media Players, and 1 digital camera. Support for all 3G spectrum bands is strong, not only for the widely-deployed 2100 MHz frequency band, but also for 850 MHz operation as in Australia and the Americas, and 1900 MHz which is also available in the Americas.
