I beleive k750's SMS counter shows only outgoing messages' count.
About some Java Application, that would stay in background and count messages (no other way to do it), I'm not sure if there is one. But I'm sure it is uncomfortable to use such program.

ya there are such apps. but then you 've to send messages through that , in order for them to count... imo...

lol, upcoming new ideas,

of course our phones have the counter but it is a bit hidden.

get to file manager, click more, select memory status, the messages field is there. if you click it again, it will come with details.(inbox,sent,mail etc.)
