From looking around on the web it seems quite easy to debrand my vodafone w950i. However it also appears that the vodafone branding is quite weak, and except for the start up graphic, is the same as the original. This puts me off debranding as there seems to be no advantage to it (unlike orange and their dreadful branding).

Anyone who knows the difference between Voda UK brand and Sony-ericsson original ? and any comments?

Well i bought the vodafone w950i pay as you go from vodafone shop at £180 last week, i then debranded with kulankendi or whatever the name is for a few quid, then i paid for unlock code which took about 5 days to get to me by email, so all in all the w950i debranded and unlocked only cost me just over £200 brand new!! I say go for it!!

yeah, fantastic. I also bought this for £180. As I am using it with my vodafone blackberry chip (with BB connect) I am not in a rush to unlock. Also the voda setup means the internet all works. I remember debranding some xdas and then taking ages to setup the gprs.

the only reason I was considering it, was if there was some major functionality voda disabled - but it doesn't seem to be the case (unless anyone knows otherwise)

I personally would debrand mine if I had a w950 (as I have with my p990) just the make the phone faster and more stable with the lastest firmware that se have produced for the cost of around £4 I think its worth it!

according to this site:
http://uiq3.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/CDA/W950i

the difference between the latest voda and the unbranded is from R9EC001 to R9F011 (with updates across the PDA, CDA, etc.).

anyone know the changelog that i would be missing out on ?

The biggest difference with the latest firmware is a much more stable Opera browser. Mine's yet to crash on my P990

Thing is though on the latest firmware the w950 will automatically download mms and gprs settings for your network making it hassle free!!

I had my Vodafone W950i de branded and unlocked by SEunlock and the device is definity quicker and seems more stable, there are a number of little things that change (for the better) and the weekly alarm issue is resolved) do it you wont regret it

I agree. Just did it, and unlocked thru voda, so I have a generic machine now.

I am pretty sure its not placebo, but its running faster after upgrade to the latest generic firmware. Very satisfied with the debrand.

Was a bit of hassle getting the GPRS connections. Finally it all worked with Voda's own settings sms, rather then the SE wizard.

Also blackberry connect, current version 3.45 on the SE site, does NOT work with the latest firmware. However, luckily on one of the BB connect forums someone had got hold of 3.50 pre-release and with a link that works now great.

So back to Bb email, mp3 player, IM+ and opera 8 browsing over 3g in one device. (well IM+ is still not working with bb connect - working on it )

I'm happy ....
