The HPM-70/HPM-82/etc. included earbuds have very mediocre sound quality. The Sony MDR-EX71SL's are much better, but far from perfect.

However, they have one important feature: short cords. Which are just the thing for using these wired stereo headsets.

I'd love to go for Shures or V-Modas but I worry about having a mess of tangled wires. What do you do about that?

you might have to mod your own short cable!

The expensive headphones are generally targetted at mp3 players not phones with hpm-70 like adapters.

You could try using one of those cheap adapters (no mike, just a 3.5mm mini-plug with only a couple of centimetres of lead), but they often have very poor audio quality compared to the HPM-70.

The most blunt and brute-force solution is to cut the cable and solder on a new 3.5 mm plug. It's a quite easy operation, it's only two leads + ground. If you don't yjink you posess the necessary soldering skills yourself, I believe that a radio repair shop or similar can do it for you for a very modest cost. As an extra, you can solder on a jack on the cable that was cut away and use it when the earphones are used with some other equipment that requires longer cables. (I have actually seen stereo earplugs that are designed with a connector like this from start.)

Another, less destructive, solution is to wind the excessive cable in fine loops and strap to the microphone with a wire strap of the kind that usually is used to bind new cables together.

Too bad more manufacturers don't make "SL" earbuds.

Cut off the offending wire or spool it into a silly-looking loop - tough choice.

Either way, thanks for the advice.

You have raised a very good point i was using the MDR-EX71SL's with a Nokia AD-46 3.5mm adapter and microphone and the best thing with the 71's was indeed the short cable facility. But as they were getting old and the wire is very thin decided to upgrade to a pair of Shure EC2s as i got them for under £40 delivered but the cable is very long.

The solution i have come up whilst not perfect works for me, i took the Velcro cable tie from a Nokia charger and cut it off, gathered the cable on the Shure's to the required length and bound it with the Velcro tie. As the Shure's can be worn over the ear going down your back and have a weighted connection there that is where the bundled cable now is. As i said it may not be perfect but works very well indeed the AD-46 is attached to the collar of what i am wearing and all cables are out of sight down the back.

The difference between the EX71's and the EC2's is well worth the effort IMO as they really do give an even better sound.

Marc

i had a pair of sony headfones they came with a headfone protector that you could wrap the spare wire around and when your not using the headfone you could also protect the headfones them selves, quite helpful

I saw these for sale the other day, quite cheap and effective

I also saw a bone version, which IMO looks better

Good point about these thingies, but not my type so...And I don't like the change of the whole cable(the "not original" cable you'll use has a bad Cu-structure and lesser purity of the Cuprum that will deliver a worse sound to the transducers, but the good original cables are only on good phones like Shure,Ety,UE,Koss(Portapro),Senns,Grados, you know what I mean). So what I do is:

1.Open the headphones' housing
2.Solder-off the cables
3.Cut off the unnecessary cord
4.Solder the cable back into the phones, but with a good alloy with 4% silver in it,very good sound from it really (you may use 1-4%,1 is not that bad, just like to go to the max )
5.Close the housing

The end result is shorter cables and a little better sound clarity(as I've used the "silver" alloy than the original bad one)
And this alloy is not hard to find, you can find it in every big shop for electronic parts and etc.Oh,I forgot - and whatever you do DO NOT use non-gold plated plugs - they have bad sound quality and often cause bad connections.

Well~ This problem annoys me alot too~!!!

Using the plastic case which come with the EX-71sp is a good method, but it just add the weight of the cable, which makes the ear-bud more easy to fall off my ear. This happens when I use my Sony Walkman WN-S703F too~!!! The connector of the extension cable is very fat and heavy, just constantly make my ear-bud fall off, especially when walking~!!!

Anyone got some idea to overcome the added weight????

cheers
