My Sony MDR-EX71SLs sound good - too good for my office. I can't hear people walking up to me, the phone ring, or even the fire alarm go off! (No, it's not a question of turning the volume down.)

I need a set of earbuds that go in the ear but not in the ear canal. I dislike "cans," neckstraps, or anyhting else with an annoying head- or neckband. Earhooks are also out of the question since I wear glasses. I'm really looking for something with the same comfort and sound quality of the EX71s, just with less outside noise isolation. If such an animal exists for not too unreasonable of a price, post it here.

Thanks

Hi Hcln Twst,

I think you are seeking the impossible as by design the in ear type of headphone will block out some noise dependant on the volume you are also using. Anything that does what you ask is going to seriously compromise the sound quality and listening experience so IMO would not be a satisfactory solution. Surely not all your colleague's hate you and at least one would let you know if the Office was on fire.

you could settle with the EX-51 maybe? the comfort level and sound quality is very close to the EX-71, and the sound blocking is not as strong. with the volumes at medium, you can still hear outside noise.

otherwise any normal earphones with neodynium magnets would do i think. i'm not an audiophile, but i don't notice much difference between normal ones and in-ear buds except for the noise isolation.

The EX-90 is pretty non-isolating with great sound. I can hear the computer fan while listening to music.

I hate the earplugs for the same reason, othere than how uncomfortable they are, I just use the sony fontopia earphones, they have excellent bass as they have a frequency response to an unusually low level, and it is much easier to hear outside noises as compared with the earplugs at the same volume.

Try the Sony MDR-ED931, I like it personally cos it has pretty good sound and I use it on days when I don't feel like using in-ear earphones. They're a good in between if you don't wanna use in-ear earphones but don't wanna use normal earphones either.

I'll check out those Sony MDR-ED931s.

I hated the EX90s. A little less bass and a lot less comfort than the 71s/81s.
