his phone went swimming? sounds like fun ;-p.
anyways it's good if only the backlights are not working. maybe you can replace them? sending them to a service center would be a good start, otherwise you could opt for a DIY job if you know where to get the LEDs. it's not that hard to disassemble the phone with the right tools...

if you're brave enough, and i think you are, why not. but i don't see the point, it would be messy probably. replacement LCDs can be bought at cnn.cn, but not sure about the backlights.

visit a mobile shop asap and ask for a "sonic bath", that will help your fone too. but water damaged fones survive chances arent the best to be honest... where are u from?

the backlits is intergrated with the keypad.And we dont want to go to a service center and call it an warranty(Word?:S).They would just say waterdamage and dont give a damn.

You can try your keypad and lcd, though if they don't work then the damage is on the connectors on the mainboard, in which case your father will need a new phone if the sonic bath doesn't work

either way, you'd have to pay for the replacement parts too, the only difference is the additional service charge if you go to an authorized service center. if the backlight is integrated with the keypad, i'm sure it would be difficult to find the exact parts in retail markets. and one way or another, your warranty has been voided since they can tell if it's water damaged.
@boba
what's a sonic bath? sounds interesting...
