I already have a GPS for my car but it broke, so I bought a bluetooth GPS receiver for my k750i because I thought that you can get TomTom as java.

I need something that can give me directions as I'm driving and I don't think Nav4All will do that.

I also have GPRS access so Google maps are available on my phone, but I can't get that to read out directions to me.

There is Mobile GMaps but I don't think it reads out either.

Any suggestions? I don't want to have to carry my laptop with me in the car.

edit: testing testing 1,2,3... to see if editing this post bumps this or not....
it doesn't so I'm going to link to a site and see what happens - let me know if it's a problem for you. This is a company supplying access control http://www.oakparksecurity.org.uk/businessAccessControl.shtml does me writing this here help thier exposure? hmm...testing testing!

nav4all works perfect with voice instructions as well as arrow-directions with distances or 2D maps if preferred. check www.nav4all.com and see for your self.

also www.navigon.com now has a similar free java-program with more and better graphics but it shuffles a lot more data so if you're not on a flat fee rate then nav4all is cheaper to use.

I have tried several Sat Nav apps with the K750i. They also work on my W810i

First I used the cheapest bluetooth GPS device from mobilefun.co.uk but it wasn't very reliable detecting satellites. I then got the newer sirfstar III version which has proved excellent.

Nav4all - nav4all.co.uk
Free at present. Works OK but awkward user interface and locked up a few times on my K750. Nice selection of voices.

Wisepilot - wisepilot.com
The best - even has 3D maps. But not free except for the 5-day trial

Navigon - navigon.com (you need the free Java edition)
Looks good but I haven't used it on-the-road because it seems to lock up too easily.

Amaze - amazegps.com
I use this daily. It's free and reliable. Sadly only 4 digit postcodes but the address search works fine.

Beware of your phone provider's GPRS tariff. I'm on T-mobile web'n'walk so it doesn't cost me extra to run these apps.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for amazegps.com in particular and the stability comments are very useful.

Google maps also have a j2me program but the official one doesn't link to GPS. The alternative is http://www.mgmaps.com/

Will let you know how I get on with that too.

Thanks again

Thanks.

Been trying out the various apps and they all have problems.

Nav4all - works but doesn't have voice read out.

Navigon - unstable. Just doesn't work for even 5 minutes.

Mobile Gmaps - doesn't do directions on the fly

Amaze - doesn't work in the UK it seems

correction - nav4all now working with voice (had to configure in settings) - fingers crossed it works

unfortunately, it looks like the only one that works in Australia is Nav4all. It does a decent job but does not appear to give accurate enough info. (It says a turn is 100m away when it is only about 10 meters. )

An update for anyone reading this from the UK:

I have got AmaZe working now, but I haven't tested it enough. There are 2 volumes - the master phone volume with the vol key, and the volume of the program itself, via the AmaZe menus.

Nav4all: got this working with an update to v7. Startup is a lot slower now. It lead me to the middle of nowhere the other day. I think it classifies some areas differently than perhaps it should, or I was on my way to a road in a similar area with the same name. I'm going to favour AmaZe now.

They both don't seem nearly as good as TomTom though (previous GPS that broke). If Windows bluetooth actually worked I could use that...
