I got my T68i about 2 weeks ago, what a nightmare to set up my laptop to send/recieve.
I am posting this here in case anyone else has the same problems a i did.
My laptop has always had IR but i have never used it, firstly when I upgraded to XP, the setup never found and installed the IR drivers, if you have IR and it isnt listed in control panel,(as wireless link) you have to go to microsoft.com and find the wireless link drivers and instal them.
Next do NOT instal the Ericsson software, if XP didnt see the IR port on setup, then the ericsson drivers wont either.
It still didnt work, everything was showing up properly, but the laptop wouldnt detect the phone, after much frustration I discovered why, the IR port uses DMA 3, which is already used by the ECP printer port.
The only way I could get round this is to switch the LPT1: from ecp to plain old bi-directional, that freed dma 3.
I then had to tell the bios that com1 was IR/serial as by default it was set up as modem/serial.
Did it work? No way...back to control panel, looked in the wireless link option and by default windoze had setup IRDA 1.0, this needs to be changed to 1.1.
once it was re-booted, success it found the phone, but it still didnt work, again windoze was the villian, it set the com port speed to 115000 by default, this needs to be set at 9600 it will not work at any other speed.
At last when my phone goes anynear the laptop the laptop spots it and connects, i can now transfer data between the 2 quite happily.

Next i really hate paying for anything, so it didnt take me too long to work out that the people who run these sights charging for animated screensavers are idiots, just go to the site right click on the image you want, slect save as and save it to your PC...wonder how long before they work that out?.
Now I have it all working I make my wn backgrounds and screensavers, if this has already been written elswhere, then i apologise.
The program i use is Irfanview, take any picture you like, crop it, edit it, then IMPORTANT you need to resize it t 101x80 pixels, make sure the colour depth is set to 256, and then save as a gif, send it to the phone, works with animated gifs as well, just grab one, resize it and away you go.
One thing i did notice, the display on the phone isnt that brilliant, so all pictures and screensavers that i send to the phone, have the colour saturation increased by 20%, they display much better that way.
Oh another thing, if you go to www.sonyericsson.com they have email configurators there, just tell them what network you are on, and what service you want on your phone, and they send you a txt message that sets it all up for you...less hassle than typing it all in.

It now seems simple what i have just spent two weeks staying up late at night to work out.
The following people, companies and websites were no help at all!!!!
My network providor ORANGE...my kids know more about phones than their techs do
The manual that comes with the phone..might as well burn it
The CD that came with the phone...even less help than orange
Sony tech supprt...takes them about a week to answer emails, and then they dont actually answer your questions
Higrade tech support (my laptop)...well my dog knows more about BIOS settings than they do
Windows tech support...hahahahahahahaha.......I dont think they would know what IRDA was if it bit them in the arse

The following websites did help though
this one, it got me pointed in the right direction
and sonyericsson.com their email configurators saved me hours of typing things in again and again.
in less than 5 mins I had my phone set up for everything gprs MMS email and wap

IR used to work for me, re-install XP, and now I can only use the phone as a modem NO MATTER what I do. Wireless link looks fine. It sees the phone, however never makes a link so I can send files to the phone.

Has anyone developed a decent FAQ regarding this subject?

I tried searching for the Wireless link drivers at microsoft.com, but I couldn't find them. I have the exact same problem as you describe. XP will not find the IRDA port

If you could point me to the URL where I can find the driver it would be great. Thanks!

Ok well first lets check a couple of things

go to control panel/wireless link

open it and go to the Hardware tab, if you have installed wireless properly, you should have 2 options there
"IrDA fast Infrared Port" & "Serial cable using IrDA protocol".
If these are not there, go to www.microsoft.com and get the latest IrDA drivers.
If they are there make sure the first option only is hi-lited.

Next click properties/advanced

Next make sure that Infrared transceiver A is set to "HP HSDL-1100/2100"
Make sure Transceiver B is set to "SIR Tranceiver"
Then set maximum connect rate to "9600"
Dont be tempted to go any faster than this, the phone wont accept it.

Next in control panel go to Phone and modem options, open it and go to the modems tab
See if you have installed "standard modem over IR Link" unless the phone is on and transmitting (blue light on phone) this will say NOT present.
If this option isnt there, you will need to install it, to instal it select add, the wizard will run, but check Dont detect I will select from a list, then look in modems, and and instal the above option.
Once thats done, re-boot, open the phone/ modems options and set your phone to transmit, Not present should change to (on my machine COM3). if it doesnt it usually means something else has the com port, in my case it was the Built in modem, so i have to disable my internal modem in the modems tab first.
Most laptops have lots of things sharing the same com ports and DMA's
The usual villian is LPT1: that usually holds onto DMA 3 if its set to ECP, this is a BIOS setting, you need to change it to Bi-directional, then it will find another free memory address.

If its still not working, go into device manager and look at the properties for fast IrDA, in my case its IRQ 3 and DMA 3, then look through all your other devices to find the one thas conflicting with either of those two, look at your othe modems or serial devices first, if you find the villian, just set it to disable.
I now run two device profiles, 1 to allow me to use my standard modem the other to use the IR modem.
If you have XP and you havent updated to service pack one, XP will instal IrDA1.0 by default, you need to upgrade to service pack 1, again go to www.microsoft.com for the upgrade.

I hope that helps, if not give me alist of the error messages you get when you try to link, IE "Invalid address" (which usually means you have the com port speed set incorrectly) and i will try and help you out

I don't get any errors though. The standard modem does indeed show up under modems when the phone's IR is enabled. The PC never recognizes that the phone is a client. I go into wireless link, and I dont have a choice for what IRDA to use 1.0 or 1.1. I even tried creating a network connection for it too, which worked for me last time. Gave the phone the ability to connect without a password too.

IR has all the right bios settings, DMA 3, irq 3. LPT is in bi-dir mode, since it's not used anyway in this case. I guess I might try sir/fir, but I swear I had fir working last time. (at least it was set to fir in the bios)

I thought SP1 could be causing it, because it was working on this pc prior to format and fresh install / sp1.

Ok, I'm gonna chaulk this one up to XP sucking.

Installed Mobile Agent and I was able to access the phone. Why XP won't see it, or let me send files to it, I have no idea. Bluetooth for Christmas.

Heres another way of doing it, if your PC has an infraRed port already installed ans it wasnt picked up by XP on setup.
To add a new infrared device

In Control Panel, open Add/Remove Hardware
On the Welcome to the Add/Remove Hardware wizard page, click Next.
On the Choose a Hardware Task page, click Add/Troubleshoot a device, and then click Next.
You may have to wait briefly while the wizard searches for Plug and Play hardware.

In Devices, click Add a new device, and then click Next.
On the Find New Hardware page, click No, I want to select the hardware from a list, and then click Next.

Then Look down the list for IrDA fast Infrared port, this is the default MS one, and will work for 99% of IR ports.

I am assuming you are using a laptop?, well most laptop builders have a space problem, so what they do is use "Virtual" com ports, it sounds like everything is set up correctly, does the PC put an icon in the sys tray when the phone is nearby?.
A stupid queston, you are setting the phone to recieve infrared?, no signal from the phone, and windoze wont know its there.

If this still does work, follow my advice further down, for adding a new infrared device.

My apologies to anyone using Wap for the next part..sorry

I will take you through the steps one at a time, but i will do it in 6 seprate posts, as i know a lot of WAP users read these forums, so look out for adding IrDA(not wap) in this thread
