AFAIK, only smartphones can get viruses so unless your planning on getting one, no need to worry

Theoretically it can on later java platforms that have access to phone resources (such as files, contacts etc), but so far there are no java viruses in the wild.

However, for a java virus to run, you would need to 1. accept the receipt of the file from an unknown source (which would install the java app) then 2. confirm which folder (games or applications) to store the unknown java app further alerting you to the virus, and 3. you would have to manually run the java virus from the games or applications folder, and 4. when the java virus runs it would prompt you to give permission to access your phone's resources.

So a java virus would be a bit like the Irish virus: "Greetings, You have just received the "IRISH VIRUS". As we don't have any programming experience, this Virus works on the honour system. Please delete all the files on your hard drive manually and forward this Virus to everyone on your mailing list. Thank you for your cooperation."

So far there are no known vulnurabilites of bluetooth or gprs or the java platform (there would need to be atleast two of those three systems compromised for the phone to be infected) that would allow a virus to run on your phone without your permission or knowledge.

Even s60 phones that are vulnurable to the sis viruses need you to accept the unknown file before the phone will become infected.
