These cars suck. They are consistently at or near the bottom of independent quality and reliability surveys. They're the most expensive to purchase, and have the highest cost-of-ownership, in their respective classes. VW of America and its dealerships threat their customers like garbage.

And then they wonder why they have less than 2% of our market

I'm facing a $2000 repair bill for engine timing. This on a perfectly maintained, unmodified, unraced, unabused Golf VR6 with
"German Engineering" my ass - it's all sauerkraut. No wonder everyone here buys Hondas, Toyotas, and Subarus. I will have to do the same

Yes. My first new car, in fact. Had some extremely minor quality issues during the warranty. Had some more expensive problems (intake crossover valve, fuel sending unit, some others) until recently. Just dropped $800 for new struts/shocks. Now this... I'm attempting to work something out with VWoA. We will see.

Some would blame the Brazilian point of assembly for US-bound 4th-generation Golfs, but I'm not convinced.

$2k for 'engine timing'???? What'd it do, lunch a piston through the block??

That money gets you a brand new Motec M8PRO ECU! I DO sympathise!!

To be specific, the 12v VR6 has plastic guides through which the timing chains run. Like all plastic (VW's especially!), it breaks. The parts are ~ $100 + tax. But there's at least 20 hours of $80/hour labor involved - the transmission has to be removed to access the upper timing chain

......shocking......and I thought the W12 was a cop-out(48Hrs to do a cam belt)....

....when you see plastic in race engines, you'll know it'll work! Until then, I can't believe VW thought it a good idea!......(not gonna swear here)

I thought VW has a good reputation in Europe. My brother has just purchased a Passat.
