> W810i EDGE and GPRS help
Bookmark topic
I have a W810i, as you can probably see and have guessed by the title.
I am in the dark about what the difference between 'edge' and gprs is.
The reason for this is my mate is on his hols in Devon, I sent him a MMS and he couldn't open it on his W810i. He called Orange and had a play with his phone and managed to get the picture.
Ever since Orange sent him the update texts he said he had the small 'G' shown on the screen above the aerial connection and it wouldn't go off. I tried on my phone to connect to Wap and the G symbol was shown but then went off when I closed the connection. On his phone it stays on all the time, even after pressing and holding the back button.
Now he's text me to say there is an 'E' in place of the 'G' above the aerial signal strength. I've never had this on my phone before and I've tried to get it to show but no joy. I've looked through the manuals but all it says is that it shows you are in an 'EDGE' area. It doesn't say how to use it or what it is or what it does.
Can anyone enlighten me? How do you turn it on and off? What is it? What's it used for? What's the difference between EDGE and GPRS, and more importantly how much is it going to cost me?
I've seen EDGE posts before but because I don't know what EDGE is I've not looked at them. Help???
Also I presume that you are only connected to WAP via GPRS or EDGE when the EARTH logo is seenat the top of the screen?
I'm changing to the K810i when Orange can get me one so I may use it more when I have the better phone so it will be interesting to know how to use it. Or would it have EDGE being a 3G phone?
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you

Well aisha, when edge or egprs is present, the connection automatically switches from gprs to faster edge...
and the G symbol showing always relates to settings in your phone, depends on whether you keep it ps or cs...

...and 3g phones don't necessarily have edge(2.5g)... so you must check out on that...

u dont have to pay more for edge or 3g as gprs. its just for a faster data transfer. so if u have in 1 month lets say 100 mb for downloads, if u have an dge or 3g fone, u ll have faster access as with a gprs one.

gprs = 57 kbps
edge = 236 kbps
3G (umts) = 384 kbps
Hsdpa = 1500 kbps
w810 has gprs and edge
k810 has gprs and 3g, but not edge.
also check which of the above your operator has coverage in your area
