There have been many questions on the Esato forum about what that icon is indicating, and I really wonder why has chosen such an abstract icon to indicate an active UMTS network. What does it symbolise? Could it be a very stylished and shaded "3", as in "3G"? To me, it mostly looks like that icon figure in the MSN contact list, but seen from above. On my work phone, which is a Motorola, the 3G icon is simply a red square with the white text "3G" in it, not very fancy, but much more easy to understand.

it looks like ice-cream to me, though I don't know why. I like it, it goes with the general aesthetic of the UI ...

I don't agree in that. Most of the icons are very intuitive and symbolic, like an earphone icon when the headset is connected, a little yellow envelope when you have unread messages, a green arrow, familiar from the PLAY button on most tape recorders, for the media player, the famous and well-established rune Bluetooth symbol for Bluetooth etc., precicely as icons should be.
The 3G icon does not resemble anything that has to do with 3G, radio transmissions, or frequency, or whatever, at all.

what I mean is it just blends with the general look of the background, though it doesn't look like it does anything much.

I would have thought a 3G icon would have denoted a higher speed or something to do with the No3.

that icon indicates 'the waves of change' from 2.5/2G to 3G.

I've always assumed its a slightly eliptical view of signals radiating from a mast

Yes, I guess so too. And 3 circles refer to 3G perhaps.

its not a bad sign, but wish only the 3 circles were shown withoiut that white background, or maybe some white line next to the 3 blue circles
