This has to be the painfully slowest way to transfer files between the phone and a computer! It's barely faster than
... Hell, the Pony Express could do this faster.
shouldn't even bother including the cable or adding the Mass Storage Device protocol to their phones any more. Instead, they should (1) make the memory stick externally accessible (like on the W810), and (2) include a USB MS card reader, like the
Sony MSAC-US40.
I know this because my US40 is on loan to someone, and I needed to replace 1.5 GB of music. It has taken
1 hour and 53 minutes to do so over a direct USB connection
The memory card reader could do the same in under 10 minutes!
PS: This isn't a knock against
as my Motorola V3i was also glacially slow over USB. I think it's just the nature of the beast... which again raises the point, why even bother?

Yes, someone borrowed my card reader, after which I needed it. So I used the USB cable for a direct connection.
There's "takes too long."
Then there's "takes way too long."
After that, there's "I'm now a senior citizen, and it's still copying files."

I'm fine with the way my W800i does things. It just stays on normally and doesn't let you access the card from the phone when you plug it in. However, my K790a's "File Transfer" mode just pisses me off! It has to reset itself and I can't take calls (or do anything, for that matter) when it's connected. And the speed's still the same!

No, unfortunantly he is right about usb speed. It is woefully slow. Phone's generally don't implement the full usb mass storage protocol the way usb memory devices normally do. I don't know why and phone manufacturers need a wake up call about this issue.
USB cable speed on phones is average 345KBps (about 2.7Mbps). This is on a USB2.0 device that should be able to manage 480Mbps if implemented true to the standard! That means a USB card reader is roughly 180 times faster than a usb connection to the phone! That's just stupid...
btw, even USB1.1 should run at 12Mbps, not the crapy 2.5Mbps we get. And before anyone says anything, yes I do have a card reader (a small multi-unit that reads everything but CF - it even reads mini-sd and sim cards). But it still irks me to have to take my phone out of it's case and then stuff around getting the memory stick out of the phone, which incidently would be impossible without finger nails.

Oops is my face red. :embarassed: Actually, Bluetooth is 45KBps and USB is about 345KBps.
But my argument still stands (with corrected figures). USB cable speed for mobile phones is woefully slow.
USB transfer via cable is between 2.5-3Mbps, which is still slower than USB1.1 (12Mbps).
Full USB2.0 (480Mbps) is about 180 times faster than the phone's USB transfer rate, and 1600 times faster than Bluetooth.
The USB cable transfer rate of computer to phone is about 10 times faster than bluetooth.
Hope that clarrifies things.
