like many of you, I've seen and read through a lot of threads where people ask to compare which phone is better, why it's better and so forth. some make their decisions using the threads, some don't. but my point is, why not we start a half-yearly unnoficial phone awards thing on Esato, based on user polls? this would be good for the casual browser who wants some opinion on phones to get, or could even be used by SE themselves to see what they're doing (and not doing) right. it's just a start, but these award things exist for a lot more reasons and the one reason I would like for them to exist is to see what Esato users prefer, and the above stated reasons. after all, how wrong can hundreds of users be, get my point?

we could start the awards right now, as a thread where users poll their opinion and a dedicated user, maybe a moderator or the thread initiator compile the polls at the end of every week. this could go on until maybe the end of June, since it's a half-yearly thing. after that, the post gets locked and maybe placed as a 'sticky' for the remaining of the year. we could even have a separate thread for discussions, a sort of massive 'this against that and why' thread.

I could nominate a few categories, namely:

best budget/entry-level handset - as suggested by Sammy Boy.

best multimedia phone - for phones with multimedia features that differentiates them from generic phones. i.e. SE W Series, K Series, Nokia N Series, and any other phones with good multimedia capabilities.

best business phone - for phones targeted towards the corporate audience. i.e. SE P Series, Nokia E Series, phones that looks and acts the business.

best smartphone - for PDA phones, phones with WM, Symbian, and so forth. this can be phones both used for business and multimedia phones.

best overall phone - an individual poll, crossing across ALL categories. for the best phone released during the recent half-year.

the Esato 'enduring classic' handset award - for the best phones of all time.

others
best feature introduced in a phone - this can be old or new features, whichever is the most innovative feature?

most popular models by manufacturer - as stated. the most popular models as collated through the poll, by the top 5 manufacturer which are Nokia, SE, Motorola, Samsung, LG.

in hindsight, I think a thread as such would be useful too in that it would gather opinions in a single place and in a conclusive manner (the democracy wins). it could also eliminate those comparison threads which goes on and on without a definitive meaning in the end. this doesn't mean that I don't like individual 'this phone vs that phone threads'. it's still very much encouraged but I think a general thread like this would be good for all.

anyways I think it's that time of year again and instead of having it once a year, we can have it once ever half-yearly since we all know how fast the industry is moving at. and I do hope that this sort of thing would be moderator sanctioned and sort of 'official' in a way. hope you know what I mean.

i remeber the thread as well, but its too old now. may be its time for a new thread.

basically users just posted their fav handset and the thread starter edit the first post as and when posts where made.

yeah, but this would be covering ALL manufacturers. I do notice that there are more and more fans of other brands coming in these days and this would only be right for everyone. this gives me another idea for categories, what about 'best overall manufacturer'?

just had a look, and the Esato Awards was actually an awards for Esato members, not phones. great idea though, can't wait for the 2007 edition ...
