why do cars have a top speed?
is it something like they have a top speed because the forces reacting on the car get too high when it goes to the top speed

Even without aerodynamics, the vehicle would still be limited by transmission final drive, engine output(power and rev limit), tyre diameter(probably other influences too, all i can think of for now tho)...

lots of cars have speed limiters, one of the reasons for this is safety. Bad idea to go 200mph when the rads are 70.

also fule economy is important

hmm...if you think about it...you *could* keep on accelerating forever if your car was absolutely brilliant, although the fuel would run out eventually. You also have problems with grip and ofcourse, speed limiters. There is also the speed limits on the roads!

Don't know whether this has been much help...but I've never been asked this in physics :S

the thing holding the car back is air resistance. the faster you go the more this force is pushing against the work of the engine untill the two forces balence. ie the faster the car is going, the more air resistance. a more aerodinamic car will have a better higher top speed
