Pretty sure I'm not the only one out here with this problem...
Presently upgrading from my previous SE T610 handset, I've been using XTNDconnectPC with Outlook2003 on W2KSP4 to maintain my handset contacts & calendar (via Widcomm bluetooth). With my new SE Z710i, the PC Suite 2.0.58 software installation has been a disaster. Usual symptoms I've heard from others - starting with: Error 1904.Module C:\Program Files\Common Files\Teleca Shared\graphicbuttoniii.ocx failed to register. HRESULT -2147220473. The specific .ocx file that failed to register is one of many. Why it isn't getting registered would be an interesting study, but so far SE isn't interested in looking into it. Their tech support response to me is that the software is fine - there must be something wrong with my computer. One of their responses was to direct me to HiWired.com. I chatted with someone there for about 10 minutes before learning they were a sales front end and didn't know anything, but would be pleased to 'fix' my problem for 75US$ upfront. Interesting that SE thinks I should pay to investigate and fix
their problem!!! I've spent about 16 hours of my own time on this. The program installation itself takes almost a half hour to run.
SE actually had the audacity to suggest I disable my firewall and turn off anti-virus protection. What the heck are they up to??? Makes me wonder why their application is almost 50MB...
I've done several uninstalls and reinstalls, and registry cleanups using Registry Mechanic (etc), each time manually removing a number of artifacts that SE's uninstaller fails to remove (very poor engineering imho). In my registry and folder searches I've found references to a company by the name of Teleca, who is the developer (unlikely Sony even knows how the software works).
I note a rather huge log file created by the installer, that is left behind and appended each time installation is attempted. Interesting that the file contains a ton of entries, including myriad failed attempts at registering dlls, but concludes in successful installation! Regardless, enough is enough. The SE software is a piece of crap!
I've just downloaded and installed FJ Software's MyPhoneExplorer 1.5.9. This program is about 2.5 MB size (sounds reasonable). Took about 30 seconds to install (as it should). I'll report back my results in the next few days. If it works out I'll certainly make a donation to them. To the staff at SonyEricsson - shame on you. I can't think of a worse customer service experience. If I didn't need an updated 850MHz handset with connectivity I'd throw the Z710i back at you and tell you to shove it along with your CD.
